What is the difference between a JDM bj73 and a bj74?

Where would I find out?

Peter, now in Winnipeg.

Hi Peter,

The main difference is the engine. The 73 has a naturally aspirated non turbo 3.4 lt Diesel 3B engine (maybe a 3B II)
and the 74 has a 13B-T 3.4lt factory turbo diesel. I'm pretty sure everything else is basically the same. The 13B-T engine was
built to run the turbo. You can still wack an aftermarket turbo on the 3B though. In Australia the 73 was sold by Toyota and is
12V while the 74 is an import and is 24V. I think all JDM Cruisers are 24V. No problem with that although you might have to put
a bit more effort into installing accessories like radios, cd players and other electrical gear.

I think thats it. Are there any other differences?

My 73 has a rotory injection pump, while my 13B-T doesn't. I'm not sure if all 73s have the rotary pump or not.

The 73 is 24V. I believe that not *all* JDMs are 24v...

Any idea which ones are 12V apart from the light duty models?
All aust models are 12V

Do you know how many of these 74's were sold in Australia?
I dont see many where I am. There are three that I have seen
in the town i'm in. My 74 (24V) a 73 and the third which i dont
know what it is.

Its good to know there might be a few out there as spare parts are hard to
come by. In Vic its hard to find parts at the wreckers and Toyota doesn't make
some 74 series parts.

Did you just moved to Winnipeg?we have quite a landcruiser community here.

There is not many around but they are out there. Fuel was cheap in the mid 80s,40-50 cents a litre.
Anyone who wanted more power than a BJ73 bought the FJ73 or an FJ60.
I think they were all between $32000-$35000, same as a 380 SE Merc.
Paul Keating had floated the dollar and the ass fell out of it,making any imported vehicle cost big $$$.
The SWB and MWB were playboy toys, for the more macho architect or superintendant :D

When I bought my 74 I was looking on red book for market value and it's listed as $5000-7000:frown: I paid more like 10 grand for
mine but it is in very good nic. I've probable spent about another 4 on it. It's not worth selling now even if I wanted too.:)
Back in the day, 20 years ago these cruisers were close to 40 grand. thats an expensive car even by today's prices.

The rotary pump on the 3B is the 3B2

no biggie, in reality i couldn't care less which the 3B has, they both have their good points and bad.
