I performed the pin 7 mod and installed my diff lock switch a few days ago. I did a snow run with the norcal 80 group but probably didn't need it so much. But then, the next day, I am backing up a car trailer with a dead Ford product and it all made sense. I was backing through a mess of dead vehicles and on uneven ground and I put it in 4 low unlocked center and the Cruiser was more manueverable than any vehicle I have ever used to tow. It just adds many more options of what you can do with the 80.

lag,

Scott M has been preaching the manuervability advantages to us for a long time. His example is the same as your experience; low range without the center diff locked makes backing trailers much easier with better control.

And the opposite is also true, the ability to lock the front axle in high range. I had the occasion to wade through some nasty mud the other day - thanks to all of the snow - and locking up before the wheels start to spin provides more pulling power from the front, and less chance you'll get bogged down. All in all, a very useful mod.
