Ok so my new toyota e-locker came in the mail and I have started to strip apart my doner axle and it is now as we speak filled with wd 40 to strip the rust from the inside of the housing.

As I was contimplating its finish i realized that I dont know 100% how the diff breather works. I know that if the system is sealed completly ill kill my axle seals and if watter gets into the axle i will risk rusting a very expensive 3rd member. So the question is: is the breather system a 1 or 2 way system, could I put a 1 way valve on the end of my breather to allow air to excape but not enter, or will I create a vacume and blow my seals. If a 1 way is out of the question is there another good way to allow the breather to work but not allow watter into the axle.

or am I making too much of a simple thing and should I jam some tubing into my axle and run it up to my bed and forget about it.

heh thanks
:D

Exactly, keep it simple. Use the ifitting from the intake of an old 22RE (threads right into the axle housing) and run some tubing up to where you know water can not get in.

i have one of the nissan fittings that goes in the mini housings.
you can have it if you want

Nate:

It needs to breath both ways. When the axle heats up from being driven at high speed, the air inside has to escape. If you drive into a deep puddle, the axle is rapidly cooled, causing the air to contract. This will suck water into the axle thru the seals.

Keep it simple. Just run the hose up as high as you can, put it in a spot where water and crud can't fall down inside.

Thanks guys will do as some crazy dude who lived on a lake once said simplisity simplisity simplisity.

my diffs are sealed WELL.

all you need is to lenghten the breather from the axle, with a hose, get it high, and slapp a clear plastic fuel filter on there.
(so you can see if what it was trying to breathe in)

i have been piling on the milage in this tuck, with this setup:
