HI everyone I am tinkering with the idea of putting a 2lt in a 85-95 truck i think that is what they fit in. Anyways before I start im looking at a rough ball park number money wise. So Im asking how much would I expect to pay for a rust free clean truck body wise the mechanical I can easily take care of, also the price of the motor and if anyone has undergone this transplant im interested in what kind of money the conversion will cost.
Thanx

I also am looking. I almost bought a 1981 truck. I was then going to swap all into my 79 mini. But looking at the engine, I noticed the exhaust coming on the right side instead of the left side. I was also worried about the transmission I would need to make this work.
I understand that the 2LT is a much better way to go, but for $300 for the whole truck, I thought it was worth looking at.

Let me know how your swap goes.

Thanks,

You can get a complete rebuild kit for a 2LT out of Australia for about $700. plus shipping. Pump rebuild should cost no more than $500. Engine core, who knows? Machine shop charges $400 max. Put it together yourself and you have a known quantity, unlike the half-cuts, most of which are rewound or unverfieable mileaage.

diesel dude,

i had done quite a bit of research on a diesel swap for a 2nd gen mini but am embarking on a 1hz / turbo swap on my bj70 instead...

the 2lt is about the worst diesel motor toyota made....indirect injection, weak head design and just 92 hp iirc. what i would look for is a motor that can mate to the r151 tranny which of couse will drop right into a 1st or 2nd gen mini. further, if you ever want to add dual cases you're set with the r151. the best 2 motors that will mate to the r151 are the 1pz and the 1kz. if i were going to do it, i'd do the 1kz cuz it's alreay turbo'd and came in the mini's overseas so you know all the parts are available. the 1pz would be great if you had a big budget and could do the swap, then turbo it...you'de end up w/ about 165hp. the kz will give you 135 in stock trim and you would have direct injection. the pz is indirect.

i saw a 1kz front clip on egay last week for 4,500usd....food for thought. the international forum would be a good place for info as well.

cheers

HAving owned most of the variants of the L series at one time or another, I disagree with your comments. Is it the worst motor? Might be, but I can tell you over the years I have had a lot of trouble free and cheap miles from them. I think the 2LT (with rocker arms) really sucked even after a pump and turbo rebuild - maybe my compression was hooped? Parts are harder to find and it is really an odd duck - kind of like the 1pz. ;) My 87 Hilux has a bone stock 2L with less than 100K kms genuine and it is really good IMHO. It holds a gear uphills long after my old 2LT and still gets at least 25+ US MPG. I have a 2l-te with the EFI and yes, I suspect the truck came with a cracked head which I replaced, but since it has been pretty good also. Amazing spool-up and get go from the turbo - still about the same mileage as the old school 2L and can kick my HJ61's ass up to 100 kms/hr then it can tcomplete with top end. While these motors somewhat frowned upon, I think they can be as relaibel as any other diesel with regular miantenance. It is true that the early 90's 2Lte/II heads were weak and redesgned in 93 I think, but after replacing and basic coolant system maintenance, should be good to go. These motors are just as overbuilt as much of other Toyota manufacturing and I can get parts from the stealership here when needed.
