Hey all, my current rig is a 90 FJ40 3f/5speed. I have located a surplus 70 series troopie, year 96, non turbo 6Cyc non-turbo diesel, engine INOP. If I were to purchase this thing for the 1G US they are asking, and the motor ends up needing major work, would my gas engine "bolt in" to the troopie ? If not, how bout the whole drive train minus drive shafts? I have some other questions which I will post separately. Thanks!

So you have a HZJ75 (it must be if its a 96 troopie)
No ,the gas engine will not bolt up to the gear box,nor the engine mounts and every important external item is on the opposite side.

Ok thanks for the heads up on that then. I don't suppose an engine/tranny/xfer swap is straightforward either...? I dunno I have a feeling the motor is ok, they know how to change oil, at least. Will look into it a bit more see if I can get a compression test done.

That item would be the water pump or are you speaking of the oil pan orientation? :-)

The radiator hoses are about the only thing that is correctly oriented.

The alternator, starter, exhaust ,power steering, aircon and a few other things are all on opposite sides,or they were when I swapped my 3F for a 1HZ in my 73 series.
Its not hard, but its not straight forward.
You also need the gearbox to suit the engine due to the spline count,or swap the input shafts
T/cases are interchangable, but if you have a choice, use the one with the 38 mm idler which is the latest design.
You would need to swap the tacho as the 1HZ and the 3F recognise different signals and the 1HZ gets its signal from the fuel pump ,while the 3F gets it from the alternator.

Oil pan wont be a problem as long as your 3F is from a landcruisEr and not a Coaster bus, forklift or something

Ok, all sounds a bit too masochistic to me, especially since in many ways HZ is probably the more desirable motor anyway. So if the diesel is toast, I'll just un-toast it! Maybe later add a turbo for more zip, in reality that will likely take a back seat to a thousand other more important things though. I'd prefer a coil sprung rig but as it's been said, I can do plenty with a good aftermarket spring set and I suspect the stock set up will be a vast improvement over what I'm currently running anyway. So when I get back home (currently out of town) I'm going to grab it before someone else does. Thousand bucks, I'd be a complete fool not too.

Do your sums,no such thing as a cheap landcruiser my old boss use to say.
An engine, pump and gearbox rebuild/replacement will be $10000+
It might be cheaper to buy something up and running.

Thank you Rosco for that advice which is obviously backed by plenty of experience, but... "convince a fool against his will... etc". A good diesel shop can refurb a pump for allot less than the thousands a new one would cost, and I'm quite sure I could do the other two for lots less also. For one thing labor down here is a small fraction of what it would cost you guy's. I've already restored 2 Landcruisers (and one Montero) down here to useful status, I'm not afraid (famous last words). I specialize in this sort of thing LOL, there are way's to get things done without saying, "I'll take a brand new complete engine, trans and factory new injector pump" sure, that probably would cost 10K. Still have not done the deal yet but will surely let you all know what my fate is if I buy it
