While the idea of swapping out a diesel engine like the one for sale in this post:

is very tempting, what are the long term maintenance issues that will result? Are parts available? Any mechanics around that know this type of engine? The engine is a Toyota, but since it was never imported into the US, what will happen if something breaks?

Parts are still available for the 3B,Toyota,SOR or 4wheel auto up in Cda as well as some Aussie supliers still supply the parts, the 3B was common in the BJ62s-42s and the 70 series.
Maintainance is somewhat minimal compared to a gaser until you reach the end of the engines life aprox 4-500k then the cost of rebuild will kick you in the wallet.
