Diesel 88FJ62 W/13B-T, Auto Trans and A/C

This is a conversion that I was planning to keep for my own use as a camping/exploration cruiser, but I have other projects including an FJ55 diesel project that I plan to keep for this purpose.

The FJ62 has a salvage title. When I got it the engine was blown and the w/s was broken but there was no other current damage and it does not appear that it ever had any real major damage in the past. The frame is straight etc and it drives straight. Cosmetically the exterior is not great but since it was supposed to be a camping rig I didnt care that much. It has been repainted at some point and has some minor body work that could be done better. The paint is not great. There is no rust anywhere.

The 13B-T engine is a JDM import with unknown miles, but I was told it had around 60K. It runs really well with an automatic trans and A/C. The windshield has been replaced. The interior is in good shape and everything works. The odo showed 145K miles. There is not currently a radio in it. Its basically stock with 31" tires. Currently has a pyrometer and boost guage. Passed local emissions and is registered.

I have to do some final finishing before it goes, but thought I would list it now. I should be done with remaining items in the next week or two.

$8000 Firm. Located in Portland.

Thanks for looking. I can email more pics if interested.

Nice diesel "sleeper" you have there. Wouldn't even suspect that fury under the hood!

Did you do the work? Is there a build-up thread? How many miles have been put on since the conversion? And what LC automatic is that? The stock 62 auto?

I moved out here from NY with my cruiser that was originally from Oregon via Arizona. But it's been all over the US with me, and now I live in Portland!

The pacific northwest has given me a bit of cruiser diesel fever. I got to get one of these some day.

Interested in a real mechanically solid FJ60 with minor rust issues?

Hi Thanks for the response. I did do this conversion, but there is not a build thread. Ive been too busy for that, but I can send pics of how any of it is put together. It has new frame mounts for the engine, but the trans crossmember was re-used in the stock location. I was able to move the trans forward 1" by rotating the rubber insulator 180 degrees. The shift linkages have been modified to account for the trans relocation. The driveshafts are stock.

The trans is an A440 - same as an FJ62. In fact this one is using the FJ62 trans with the torque converter and valve body from a BJ74 auto trans. They have different shift points so these parts were switched from a non-working 74 trans to the 62 trans. The trans in this 62 was rebuilt at some point and works well now. The 74 trans had issues with reverse.

I have only put about 250 miles on it at this point. It has a lot more (seat of the pants) power than an FJ62. The turbo is maxing out at about 7PSI boost so there is some room for more boost without adding an intercooler.

What kind of city/highway mileage do you get? How much can you comfortably tow with this setup?

I havent driven it enough and consistently enough (without a lot of idling) yet to have any idea of mileage.
Towing capacity is a good question. I really dont know. I would guess that it should tow as much as the 3FE would have, but whats comfortable? I have a friend that regularly towed a heavy car trailer behind his 62 with bimmers on it.

Thanks for your interest.

Ive been driving this to work all this week and I really like it. Im planning to take a longer trip this weekend and should have a basic idea what the fuel economy is like.

Its really fun to drive. It would be easy to get bad economy because I find myself putting my foot into it a little. Highway onramps are a breeze and it will accelerate up any of the hills around Portland (and there are a few decent ones on the highway here).

I love the uniqueness of the sixty series wagons, but unfortunately the 3FE can't really tow much, especially up the mountains. The diesel sounds appealing to me, especially if it's got some power.

Well this one does have some power, but its probably not your best bet for towing. It would probably do well with an M416 size trailer so long as you dont fill it with sand. If you are looking for a conversion on the 62 you have let me know. I could install a 12HT (auto or manual) for you.

It would make an ideal expedition rig with all the hard work done and a not too perfect body;)

23MPG recorded so far - first short trip.

Took a 220 mile trip today. About 1/3 driven between 70 and 80 mph. The rest of the trip was 2 lane highway and some town driving. 3 people for the whole trip and a few hundred pounds of cargo for part of it. Crossed the coast range twice with max elevation around 2700 ft to near sea level on both sides.
No real trouble in the coast range. Could maintain 50-60 without kicking down the auto trans. When I had to kick it down it would accelerate and hold 60-65. Ill drive it up to Timberline Lodge on Mt Hood in the next few weeks if I still have it.

We got about 23MPG for the trip.

Wow. That's great mileage. I wouldn't have expected that at all, especially at those speeds! Sweet build by the way.

I was pretty happy with the mileage. I think it could be a little better with some tuning and conservative driving.

Tough Market dude... I've been trying to sell an FJ60 for 6 weeks now with only two tire kickers coming to look at it. Wana trade me!?
