I have a full floater fj60 axle that I keep breaking the detroit in. Is there a modle by detroit for the full floater like #225sl124a, I see its for an Australian land cruiser, would that be the full floater? The Detroit keeps breaking the inner gear where the c-clip retainer pin goes through it.

I have an aussie locker in my 1978 45 FF rear end. It has been working flawlessly for several years now. I don't recall a c-clip in there though.

Sounds like a problem with Detroits' spider gears, or Binding by the locker assy. How many times has this happened? What does Eaton say about it? There should be no issues wit the FF. I run one in a FJ55 FF. No probs in 6yrs.

Howdy! Something doesn't sound right about that. Are you sure you need a C clip on the ends of the axle shafts? I always thought the axles were held in position by the flanges on the outer ends. John

Do they not make a model expessly for the FF rear, i always thought the Detroit was bullet proof.

I have a full floater- no c-clip-the detroit is designed for the c-clip axle so there is a hole in the center gear for the retaining pin in the c-clip diff which is a weak point, break an axle and the backlash will break the locker. The question is will the detroit 225sl124a for the australian land cruiser work in the full floater?

I'm sorry,:whoops: I guess I should clarify a little better. First off thanks all for the input. You are all correct that the FF does not have c-clips, the detroit is designed for a c-clip diff therefore it has the c-clip retaining pin in it creating a hole in the center gear where I keep breaking it(3 times) if there was no retaining pin then there would not be a hole there making the gear stronger and maybe I would not break it. Detroit makes a great product there is no problem there, the problem might be 350 horse, 37 inch tires and a heavy foot:o the only problem with the FF again would be me...letting the nuts on the axle flange get loose causing enough slop to break the studs causing the backlash that breaks the detroit. Eaton has told me that about every third axle or birfield break you can expect the locker to be taken out with it. I like the looks of the aussie locker but since I have gone with the detroits I no longer have a carrier to use with it. I have always thought that all land cruisers came with the same third member design(until 91 when the front diff was changed)so I was wondering if the detroit made for the australian land cruiser would be for the FF?

They are not. I kilt a rear 8" mini truck Detroit with only a 22R and 33's. Long story, but the gist of it is that those don't have enough spigot length on their side 'gears'. MISF snapped a Warn floater conversion axle shaft and kilt a D60 Detroit. Not uncommon that when a shaft lets go that it wipes out the Detroit too.

ARB lists a different model for the FF than for the SF, but makes no distinction as to it being unique to any particular region. Since the FF is from OZ one might assume that the Detroit for those would fit. Would be worth a call to Eaton to confirm.

Howdy! I am pretty sure that Australia has received both FF and SF axles, but there has never been an "Australian Landcruiser model". I think it is a nickname derived from the fact that we never got FF here in the USA until the 80 series. Thus, if you wanted a FF for an earlier model, it most frequently came from Australia. I am a bit confused as to why Eaton continues to give you a unit for a SF if they also make a unit specifically for a FF. Even a Dana 70 is not 100% bulletproof. It sounds like you might be well advised to modify your driving style, or carry lots and lots of spares. John
