In my first few months of ownership of my 80 I've accomplished a lot of the PM and am tackling the knuckles this coming weekend. Now that I'm getting closer to being able to accessorize I've been looking for an affordable swing out tire carrier and none of the replacement rear bumper options are affordable. I got to searching and found the Knucklebone Tire Carrier made by Detours Offroad on here. It mounts directly to the pintle mount on the rear crossmember. Some of you guys have this on your rigs and really like it. My wife drives our Cruiser quite a bit and there is no way she could lift a tire up and down to access the rear tailgate. It seems like ya'll had great things to say about Mark from Detours so I sent him a message seeing if he could make something like his XJ Tailbone (which is a swing out that attaches to a stock XJ rear bumper) that is on his website: XJ TailBone . I let him know that I'm running 285 BFGs and I wanted a swing out that I could mount to the existing rear crossmember that would clear the tailgate when it is lowered. He said no problem, he'll make it to bolt to the pintle mount and offset the tire to the drivers side. Mark estimated that it would weigh 40 lbs which with the loss of the receiver weight should come out about the same as stock. It was $425.00 and $55.00 shipping to my door in AR. I just placed the order yesterday and he says he'll have it done by the beginning of February. I'm pumped for such a cheap option to get the tire out from under the rig . I'm also going to take off the receiver for extra ground clearance.

My next project is to get a local metal shop to fab a rear skid plate that bolts to the frame where the tow hooks are located and gives the rear some extra protection. Still brainstorming on that one. I'll post pics of the swing out once it gets to me and I get it mounted.

I don't know, man, if there is no other support this thing should perhaps not swing out too far out there as a 285 tire on a long arm might wreak havoc on that pintle mount and/or cross-member... Or does it tie in to the side somehow?

Hmm. I think you're right if I was either doing a 35" tire or if the swing arm was too long. He is going to offset the tire to the driver side in order to make the swing arm shorter for it to clear the tailgate. Has anyone else attempted to do this same type of carrier? Does there need to be reinforcement behind the crossmember? Something like the slee 2" receiver? Or maybe even a larger support that bolts to the tow hook points on the frame that can somehow tie in?

That sounds great and I too would be interested in something like that for a 35 inch spare but I would be worried about all that weight on the pintle mount without any other support. Look how much support the XJ setup has versus on the LC it would just be 4 bolts fairly close together in the middle. I was actually thinking about ordering his normal option that swings down and even with that I had some concerns with the swaying.

Wow, yeah that is exactly what I'm thinking it'll look like. That one bolts right to the pintle mount as well in the first picture. The install instructions show a receiver mounted then the swing out bolts to that. Interesting. Anybody have the AJIK swing out on their rig? Have you had to reinforce it at all or is the pintle mount sufficient? It looks like there is a strut also to assist with opening.

I see. So the bottom arm has two additional 25mm bolts coming from the back of the crossmember into the arm for extra support. I've sent the link of this Thread to Mark with Detours so he'll see it as well. I think that sounds like a great way to get the extra support needed.

Let me know what you hear back as I too would be interested! Mark hasn't replied to my last couple emails in regards to ordering the tire carrier that holds the tire in the middle and swings down but maybe that is a blessing in disguise if this pans out! Haha

@Arkansas80 how did this finally work out? Is it finished... any pics?

Yes! I got it last week on Wednesday. Mark with Detours has had some bad luck with personal stuff so that delayed the build but it made it last week and it's awesome! I'll take pics in just a bit and post them tonight.

Great! Congrats! I can see your excitement radiating from your post. Lol! I love the fresh excitement from a new part arrival. This is a big one too. How much did it come out to be $$? I'm definitely interested.

Ha! Funny self promo Nlxtacy. The Detours swing out cost me 425 plus shipping. However, he remade it twice and changed the design. I think he is a little more into it than what I paid. It'll end up being around 500 plus shipping I think. He is super easy to reach... Just call detours(it's a one man shop) and he will answer or get back to you quickly. I didn't take pics today but I will tomorrow. My review of it is that overall it is perfect for what I wanted. I have never had a swing out bumper so I do not know what you guys are used to but it does have some motion when I hit a pothole or some other big bump. If you go and grab the tire you can shake it front to back a little but not side to side. The motion does not happen at the pintle mount or the latch but just within the entire unit. For me it is absolutely acceptable and not a concern but I don't know what your expectations are. Mark sent the hardware required to mount it to the pintle mount. I ended up having some rusted out threads so I drilled out each hole and put 3" long 1/2" bolts on top and 2 1/2" bolts on bottom. I got a piece of 16 gauge steel from Ace and used it as a backing plate( not that this probably did anything for support). Again, I'll get pics and post tomorrow.

@Arkansas80 Not my intention to self promote, I'm not very good at it. But the AJIK design was mentioned twice and I got a PM about it so just wanted to make sure people had the proper info. Sorry about that :(

I'll get pics and post tomorrow
Looking forward to seeing the pics! Please get some up close at the mounting location if possible. Very interested... especially at that price range. Thanks!

Alright here are some pics...

The one showing the tire mount shows how the stem is offset on the plate. That allows you to dial it 90 degrees and change the tire location from up higher, more center, down lower, or more lateral. I set mine on the tire being as low as possible.
