This is a good deal if you want to use a laptop for your GPS needs

Read all about it HERE

That is a good price, but is the older model. The newer one that I have is the LT-40, it has some advantages. The DeLorme unit works well, one of the things that I like is; they have a driver that allows it to work on two software programs at once. One of my gripes is; if you allow the PC to go into hibernate the driver wont come back when awakened, must be rebooted.

The other one that I have is from my research one of the top rated, the GlobalSat BU-353. Mine took a dump, but they quickly/painlessly replaced it. Other than that it works well.

The GlobalSat is waterproof and has a strong magnet for mounting, but the suction cup that came with it doesn't stick to anything. The DeLorme isn't magnetic, but the suction cup actually works.

DeLorme has a pretty good forum;
DeLorme Forums – GPS, Topo & Street Mapping Software and XMap GIS

I found this forum helpful on laptop gps info;
Laptop GPS Hardware

This is a highly recommended vendor in most forums, I have had good results dealing with them;
Cable / USB GPS Receiver - GPS Hardware & Acc.

The Globsat BU-353 is ranked high but $36 plus shipping makes it 80% more I also heard they break :frown: enough said :flipoff2:

BTW Kevin I forgot to ask you last run, what kind of GPS setup are you running? Looked like a tablet PC on a cradle with a remote receiver?

It's a Fujitsu slate with a daylight viewable screen, one of the above mentioned GPS dongles and Topo! software.

Nice. Kinda thinking about a tablet PC for my next laptop when this Vaio gives out. What did you use to mount it? Custom or?

I don't think I would want to use my main laptop for a trail unit? They tend to take a beating, vibration, flinging drinks, dust, etc, think of them as somewhat disposable. Older tablets are relatively cheap, there have been a bunch of Itronix IX325's going on eBay lately. They are very nice units, sealed, have screw holes in the back for mounting, etc, the problem that I have with them relates to small screen and "experienced" eyes! :o

Genuine ghetto fab. :hillbilly: Made an angle bracket and a drilled metal rod to go over the seat bolts. Brittan bent a piece of 1” tube, some grinding, welding and good to go. Made the tube two piece, so one bolt removes the top part.
