I'm going to have to back out . We recieved news last night that a good friend of ours was killed in a auto accident Monday afternoon . I'll be heading home tomorrow .

Sorry I catch up with ya next time .

Very sorry to hear Rocky and condolences to the family and friends. Travel safe.

Did anyone ever tell you that water is bad?

Just got home from helping out another fellow mudder with his 80. Justin hadn't planned on doing a front axle rebuild so soon, but after a recent trip to Richloam he spent a little too much time in the water. It took its toll on his truck. After a few days, his birfs stated clicking. Soon thereafter, a grinding noise showed up. I wasn't sure what to expect, but after tearing everything down we saw clear evidence of water intrusion on both sides of the axel oil seal. The grease in the hub was a mix of grease and water, and there was also water showing up in the knuckle housing.

After cleaning more stuff up, we found rust and dirt (or some kind of abrasive) in the wheel bearings. Nasty stuff - the inner wheel bearing scarred up his birf a bit but he was able to clean it up enough to make it pretty decent. A couple of the wheel bearings looked like they were bathing in rust.

We swapped birfs (I got the axel back in with the c clamp on the first try on both sides - I was pretty proud of that trick!) and put everything back together. Oh yeah, and we had to replace 10 of the 16 hub studs due to stripping or other issues (thanks for the tips Luis and Archie on that - the double-nut trick was probably the single most effective way to remove and replace them).

Justin went a title ape-s*** trying to prevent future water intrusion by using in-place gasket sealer wherever possible. I guess time will tell if it was worth the effort!

I took it for a quick spin and no more clicking, steering seemed to be perfect to me, and of course the grinding is no more now. But what a mess of a job - we were both pretty beat tonight. I think it was around a 13 hour job (26 man hrs) all said and done.

Oh yeah, and we discovered a nice transfer case leak, too. Rear main seal, just like mine I think.

Looks like I have a couple other trucks meeting me there. Nobody from Mud?!?!

When I was in Alaska and was regularly in water waist deep I would pack everything with marine brease, assuming if it had no room to go water would stay out. You can also seal your breather and pressurize the axle to maybe 3psi to help keep the seals sealed. You may check to make sure the breather is clear too. If the breather is clogged when the axle goes under water it cools and creates a "vacuum" and can pull water past the seals. Others have used small balloons on the breather at the axle to equalize pressure at depth. Lots of options and glad you got it back together.

New Guy

New to the forum, was over on the FLCA site, but didn't see much activity. Looking for some wheelin spots and folks to ride with.

Good day of wheeling! Hooked up with someone from another forum running a 2011 4Runner and spent a few hours on the trails. Wish there were more trails, but the mix of stuff to get into and the climbs/tight spots were great. My kind of wheeling.

Some pics from Hard Rock -

The climb wasn't bad, but on the other side it dropped right off so without a decent lift and sliders it is easy to get hung on.

After watching the Jeep come down the top part of this chute, we ran up it. Fun climb that required a spotter and finding just the right spots for traction.

Welcome!

Palm Coast, huh? Not a whole lot over there I don't think!

As I'm sure you know the wheeling in Florida isn't tremendous, but there's a few spots, and we try and organize a few outings here and there.

Whatcha drivin'?

Thanks, appreciate the welcome.

I have spent quite a bit of time in Applalachicola NF, Osceola NF, Ocala NF, and Withlacooee. I grew up in Florida. Lately I have been playing and exploring the area of Flagler Estates. Been lurking on some of the Jeep forums from my area.

I just got a 2012 FJC that I am starting to build up a bit, but its my daily driver, so I am looking for a FJ60/62 to buy for a dedicated wheeler project.

What shape do you want the FJ60? I'm aware of one on CL right now that keeps dropping the price... I don't know anything about it, but it is available I believe ;)

Wished I could have been out there with ya .

I think we are going to have a run the weekend of July 14 . Keep a look out for the official post for more info .

If you ever get back up this way let me know , maybe I'll beable to meet up with ya .

Looks like you guys had fun. Sorry none of us could join in...and that's very unusual for FLCA. Normally there's at least four or five that are just waiting for an opportunity. Hope we can meet up in the near future.

Welcome CD!
We have quite a few interesting places to wheel in the area and you are welcome to join us. You'll love your FJC...they are awesome machines. How much do you want to spend for your 60? I have one that is sprung over that runs great. Drove it to North Carolina last year for an Overland Expo and also this year to Great Smoky Mountain Trail Ride in Sparta, Tennessee. Picks are on this site under Archie. If you want mine I will buy another club members truck if it is still for sale. I am just about to make the 60 an expedition vehicle so let me know before I get started. This truck hadn't been off road until I took it there and I haven't abused it. Engine runs like a top. Minimal rust. AC is COLD! Nothing been done to her yet except the spring over axle lift. Currently has 35's. This truck is not a picture of beauty but has all the good bones to serve someone well. I have not advertised this truck...yet.

I am always up for a trail ride, just let me know when and where.

The FJ 60 on CL in Deland is a bit rrusted through. Right now I am waiting to sell my motorcycle (2000 BMW R1100R), once I can move her, the hunt begins in earnest.

Archie, saw the video from the GSMTR, I like it, if my cash was available I would definitely be on it.

Chris

Thats the only thing wrong with hard rock after a few times gets old. Fl has thousands of acres of public land we just have to start using it more. sorry to hear about your loss Rocky.

I'm up for the proposed weekend of 30th but can wait for the July date that was thrown around by Rocky.

Hey Rocky, we will all catch up before too long. Hope you guys are doing okay and everything went as well as they could considering.

I can't wait to get back up there (not sure we can make it mid July - I am traveling a bit before and after) and also really looking forward to learning some of the other areas we can hit up. HR was fun but I can see it getting a little old if you go a bit.

I will definitely post next time we can head up, and will try to plan it a little more than a week out. Keep posting if the group is getting together and we will try to make those as well.

Sounds like an even trade? Your BMW = my 60?
