Started making grinding noises. Tranfercase was dry. Filled t-case. Tcase whined accelerating and deccelerating. Rebuild t case, took a while but went well, i thought. Reinstalled and was dissappointed with the maiden voyage. Still whining but not quite as loud. drove it some more and it kind of worked itself out, maybe? The accelerating noise is almost acceptable. The deccelerating noise is unacceptable. Nuetral=NO noise, Clutch in= no noise. Accelerating through the gears ok. Cruising in gear is alright, but more stress is more noise, and let off the gas is way more noise. what do you think?

I had this same issue on my fj40, when the TC was freshly rebuilt the gears took some time to mesh and it was noisy for awhile, now it is much better, took about 3k miles though. The other reason I have had noise is driveshaft angles. I found that when loaded down for the trail in the rear, the driveshaft angles changed and caused noise/vibrations. I remedied this with an add a leaf (long style) in the rear spring pack to give it more carrying capacity. Make sure you are not getting vibes from the rear driveline, this will many times happen on deceleration and sound like grinding. Hope that helps.

Howdy! Old gears that have run dry have scarred the tooth surfaces, and they may be noisy for a long time. If you have any new gears running against old gears, same problem. Heavier gear oil MAY help. I have run 140W in mine. Now I run industrial grade with hi-tech polarized molacule mojo. Goes for about $80 per 5 gal bucket. John
