Furnace Creek Inn is by far the nicest place to stay in Death Valley, and the price reflects it.The wife and I are planning a camping and hotel trip to Death Valley via the east side of the park coming from Nevada. We are looking to hike a bit and sightsee. She has never been there. Any must see suggestions?
Hoping for April or May at the latest.
And of the two hotels in Furnace Creek what one might be better, the ranch or the inn?
Thanks,
BigJim
If you come in from Shoshone and follow 178 N you can spend half a day just stopping at the scenic pull outs, they all have something to offer. This will route you by Bad Water, the lowest point in N America. From Furnace creek North you can continue making stops at the various pull outs. I would include Scottys Castle and UbeHebe crater in the Must See group for the N end of the valley. If you have any kind of high clearance vehicle the Race Track is pretty amazing and the road is usually pretty good.
If you come in from the N. I would recommend HWY 374 out of Beatty. Be sure to fuel up at Eddy World, gas is rare in DV proper and pricey. Make a stop at Rhyolite and take Titus canyon (high clearance recommended) into the park. According to the Death Valley Morning Report there is construction M-F on HWY 267 so I would avoid it.
We were looking at a trip down there in the next few weeks to explore some off road trails on the east side of the park. I'm hoping we can do Chloride, Echo Canyon and Hole in the Wall. These are all pretty much 4WD only roads and we haven't been yet so I can't tell you much about them.
