I'm building a Dana 60 rear for a Tacoma... Anybody know if the Tacoma master cylinder will push rear Dana 60 stock drum brakes ??? I'm pretty sure it will...but not sure enough.:D I would like to avoid the Ford Torino / Exploder rear disc brake conversion process for this one... if possible...

You need to measure the piston/bore size of the wheel cylinders in both units to make a determination if they are the same, or even close. Also factor in the distance the pistons travel, etc etc. Its all about moving fluid, which translates the pressure exerted by your foot, assited by the vacuum to the brake shoes or pads. Take for example a large piston area on the master cylinder side and a small piston area on the wheel cylinder side: Easy to move, but may explode the wheel cylinder due to the amount of fluid being moved. Sawp it around and you may not move the fluid with enough force to stop the vehicle. Be very careful when screwing with brake stuff!!!! Also a question: If youre using Dana 60 in the rear, is it 8 lug ,and how are you dealing with the 6 lug Toy in the front. I looked into it and could never find a 6 to 8 or 8 to 6 adapter, and never found a 6 lug 60...Very interested to hear.

Thanks for the reply.. I understand volume and pressure, just not sure if the Toy master cyl. can supply the volume/pressure needed for the stock Dana wheel cyl.. My reason for thinking it may work is if the Toy master cyl can push 4 piston Ford Exploder rear disc brakes, I would think it can handle a single Dana 60 wheel cylinder........??? :hhmm: As for the axles, custom 35 spline with the 6 on 5.5 pattern if I go disc brake... much more affordable than it sounds. Drums may have to be custom if Currie or somebody doesn't already offer a pre existing product. Good question, hadn't thought of the drum issue due to normally going straight to discs.. damn it..

Could you use the Toy wheel cylinders on the Dana backing plates? Or put the Toy backing plates on the Dana axle? Youd have to do some machine work, but it wouldnt have to be exact-exact because the cylinders will afford you a little leeway. Grab all your parts and see what looks like the best adaptation!

I think it would be easier/less expensive option to buy/make the adapter and use the $25 GM MC as it is a known entity. Adapting Toy parts on another axle sound complicated and unproven.

Complicated and unproven is how we advance, figure things out and make ourselves better, i.e. discovering Amercia, trips to the moon etc. The GM master sounds like a good idea, but if you/he is running Toy brakes on one end/axle and GM on the other(axle), the blend has to be somewhere. Using all Toy hydraulic stuff and adapting the Toy wheel cylinders to the GM backing plates could be the least difficult....Or not! Dont be afraid to mess with different combos until you get the thing that makes the most sense or works the best. IMO

Call Scott at Rockstomper.com to get his opinion, he's tried just about everyhting!
