my buddy had one of his CVs replaced with a CVJ rebuilt axle. I recommend the axle because I hear they are very good and guaranteed for life. Under light load and deaccelartion at rooughly 35 mph it makes a whooping or thumping noise. It doesn't pull on the wheel, or vibrate. But, you can feel it in the floorboards. I looked and the joint is not leaking or misaligned. Any ideas? I'm needing replacements soon and now I'm concerned about CVJ as an option.

could it be the endplay in the axle? we got under there and I can move the new axle in and out of the front hub more than we can with the older one. how much end play should it have? end play may or may not be the correct term.

Not sure I understand what you mean by end play. If you pop off the center cap can the splined part of the axle that protrudes through the hub be moved in and out of the hub? There should be as close to zero end play as possible. Toyota makes c-clips with various thicknesses to reduce the play. However, I've never heard that sort of sound from the issue you describe. It sounds more like they left out a ball bearing when they rebuilt the axle

He found the problem. The shop left his lug nuts on finger tight.... Jesus, that could have been bad....

Indeed.

When I was about 9 years old my dad owned a full-service gas station. One of the guys who worked for him swapped out some tires on my mom's car, and my mom and I headed home. The left front tire came off just a few blocks away. My mom was about 4'11" and my dad was a 5'11" farmboy, maybe stronger than the average mule. My mom lit into him pretty good - for myself I thought it pretty exciting (boys that age don't over think consequences, or at least I didn't) - I never saw him that scared before or after (and I'm pretty sure it he more scared of my mom than car damage).
