Hi All,

I have both front CV axle boots torn on my 08 GX470 and by the looks of it, it's been that way for a while.

I have only had it GX for about 3 weeks and figure I will just replace them when I put on the lift instead of trying to salvage them.

Would you guys recommend getting heavy duty axels or just OEM? I have seen them as low as $60 but am also afraid to buy cheap and get stranded. What's your recommendation?

my recommendation, if your are tool handy and no afraid of get dirty, rebuilt your old ones. I did that with OEM boots. Spent like $110 for all 4 boots with everything including grease. Took me like 2-3 hrs. there is no need of heavy duty axles. My two cents.

CVJ is a great resource as well if you are not up to rebuilding yourself but want OEM quality or better for the lift. I worked with them to decide if mine were worth rebuilding myself of just getting a core refund ($120 I think) they offer when you order from them. I was putting on a 2.5" lift on mine and had the same issue as you. I ended up rebooting one myself with parts from CVJ and then putting a completely rebuilt one they sell on the other side. Both with the Red boot for lifts.

I was thinking about the $60 CVs that you are looking at but these suck to change and everyone seems to see 10 years with OEM and 1-3 years with the $60 axles, and that is without a lift.

I recently replaced both of mine with NAPA remanufactured axles. They were around $80 each. I believe Cardone does the remanufacturing for NAPA. My thoughts were that the remans would be Toyota parts at heart and more durable that a cheaper, new Chinese axle. No issues so far but it's only been a month. I kept the old axles and will rebuild them if these NAPA axles fail. Changing them is an easy job.

Either way, make sure to opt for the HD axles with thermoplastic boots.

In Phoenix there is a drive shaft/axle shop where you can drop off your axles and have the OEM ones rebuilt. I think it is similar price to buying new ones from Autozone but you still OEM axles. Maybe a shop near you has the same service.
