As I have learned so much from this forum, I wanted to give a little back. This past weekend I replaced the cv axles on my 2006 GX470 with CVJ axles and wanted to give some tips and part numbers. Due to some incorrect information I received online I ordered a few incorrect seals and had to pay through the nose for the correct parts at my local Toyota dealership (NAPA doesn't carry the ones I needed).

I do however make no guarantee that the below information is correct, nor do I accept any responsibility for your actions with the below information.

Parts List:

(1) Axle shaft oil seal # 90311-47027

(1) Axle shaft oil seal # 90311-47013

(2) Steering knuckle oil seal # 90316-A0001

(2) Front axle hub nut # 90179-28007

(2) Lock cap / Adjusting cap [for front axle hub nut] # 43525-35010

(2) Cotter pin [for front axle hub nut] # 95381-04045

(2) Front axle hub grease cap # 43514-28010

(2) Tie rod end castle nut # 90171-14042

(2) Cotter pin # 95381-03225

(1 each) Front differential crush washers # 12157-10010 & 90430-24003

(2) CVJ CV Axles # 9808 TR

(2 Quarts) Gear oil – Mobil 1 75W-90

Tools List:

3lb small sledge hammer

Harbor Freight Pittsburgh 12pc. Industrial Punch & Chisel Set # 4885 (link)

86MM Oil Filter Wrench (link)

Slippery Pete Fluid Pump (link)

OEMTOOLS Axle Puller # 27032 (link)

Longest threaded 5/8 In. x 18 In bolt available at hardware store [for axle puller]

Jack

Jack stand

Torque wrench [capable of 173 ft/lbs]

35MM Socket [for hub nut]

Various hand tools: ratchets, sockets, socket extensions, breaker bar, combination wrenches, pliers, etc.

Makita cordless impact driver [my new favorite tool – removed the hub nut without drama!]

Tips:

Some of the above parts are completely optional, but I would certainly recommend getting replacement steering knuckle oil seals (# 90316-A0001) as my existing seals were literally in pieces.

Some of the above tools are completely optional as well, but I would recommend the OEMTOOLS Axle Puller (# 27032) – which is a free tool rental from AutoZone – as it made removal of the cv axles from the hub sooo much easier. Due to my steering knuckle oil seals failure the cv axles had begun rusting themselves into the splines of the hub making removal a frustrating experience, until I drove a 5/8” bolt through the axle puller flange onto the face of the cv axle.

Remove the spindle (I left the hub attached), doing so made removal and installation of the steering knuckle oil seals (# 90316-A0001) much easier. Once on the bench it was pretty straight forward to make use of the 86MM oil filter wrench that I already had on-hand which fit almost perfectly to drive in the seal.

I went ahead and changed my front differential fluid while I was in there, even though it was early. Just be sure to remove your fill plug before draining your fluid – a preventative practice I always follow.

Great write-up. Thanks for sharing.

My passenger side outer boot recently ripped and has spit out most of the grease. I'm considering replacing both axles and bearing/hub assemblies since my GX has 240k on the originals. Also planning to use the CVJ axles, and bearing/hub assemblies from bluepitbearings.com

The CVJ 9808TR axle description states "Needs additional clearance of +1” diameter, +1” length." Mine has a 2.5" OME lift so I think these axles will work just fine. Is your GX lifted?

Sounds like a great combination of parts! I do have a 2.5" lift installed as well, I didn't realize CVJ required a lift to use the high-angle boots.

I checked with the guys at CVJ and the 9808TR axle itself is OEM length. It is the red inner silicone boot that is 1" larger in diameter and length over OEM.

Has anyone used the dobinsons high angle boots? looks like they replace the outer boots, while the CVJ red Si replace the inner.

Getting ready to install the same CVJ axles, 9808TR. Do you guys that installed it have diff drop installed on your GX470's? I have a 3" lift but also has diff drop installed and wondering if this will cause a fitting issue. TIA!

I have not used these, my outer CV axle angle does not seem "extreme" enough to me to warrant. You might check out the GXOR Facebook group as I think I've seen a few posts about them.

I have 2.5" of lift with no diff drop and didn't have any noticeable issues installing related to the lift.

Replaced the outer driver side boot on my GX recently, this write up would have been helpful.

Also thanks for the part numbers! My truck was missing the grease cap.

this is an amazing post.

I was given this part number 90311-47026 as an alternative to 90311-47013. seems like 90311-47026 is a newer part number. anyone know if there's even a difference?

just putting it out there for more information.

It appears that 90311-47026 is listed as for a GX460 or LX570 (9031147026 - Oil seal; seal. Front drive shaft, right; oil (for differential side gear - Genuine Lexus Part - https://parts.lexus.com/p/Lexus__/OIL-SEAL-SEAL/63608653/9031147026.html), so I am not sure if it would fit on a GX470. Whereas 90311-47013 is interestingly listed as for a GX470, GX460 and LX570, but has not been superseded.

But, consider that the MSRP for 90311-47026 is $6.03 more than 90311-47013 and my factory original seals were still functioning at 167,000 miles, i.e. I don't see a lot of need to use a different part. But to each their own, let us know how it goes.

90311-47026 this worked just fine.

I have another information part number clarification.

I saw that this part 90304a0001 was referenced on GXOR FB as the mirror dust shield to 90316a0001 oil seal. it is not. it actually appears to be another reference to the same part?

many times the mirror dust shield to the knuckle oil seal gets mangled in shipping. seems this part cannot be purchased separately from a complete axle. many people just bend this dust shield back into shape, I had to do the same.

41336-35020 did not come on the axles I bought (used GX460 / 5th generation 4runner axles)

I installed without, but will have these on hand for the next time I pull the CVs.
