On my new-to-me cruiser, one of the lower CV boot clamps is off and riding loose on the axle. The boot looks like it’s in pretty good shape, but there is a gap where grit could have entered, and grease probably leaked out (from what I see below the axle). I don’t know how long it’s been like this — previous owner said the outer boots were replaced about 5 years ago (maybe 25k miles?).

My current thought is to pull the CV axle, remove the boot, inspect its condition, replace with a new axle, and reboot the old one for a spare if it’s not ruined. I’ve never done this job — but I want to learn how, since this is a common failure point on our rigs.

Any other thoughts about how I should proceed with this scenario? The rig has a moderate OME lift (2”), and I wonder if it ultimately would benefit from longer boots vs stock.

its not too difficult of a job. you have no idea how much grease has been lost or if water / sand has gotten in there, so the only real solution is to take it apart and inspect / reboot

Time for a new axle. That doesn’t look OEM, and if grease isn’t flinging out, it’s been run dry and will fail anytime.
