Can a transponder key be cut at any locksmith /hardware store using a grinder s they do typically? I have a new key I need cut but remember hearing somewhere that transponder keys need to be cut using a different process (less vibration?).

You might consider going to the dealer...If the key is misscut, @ least you have some recourse to get (a free replacement)...

Who knows if a locksmith would honor your request if the same thing happened there (misscut)...A.K.A. ... "oops...sorry `bout that mister"...

I spoke to CDan about this. First, he suggested definitely having a Toyota dealer do it. Second, he suggested buying a cheap generic blank (non-Toyo) and having them cut it first - then verify that it works on your doors, etc. If so, they should then be able to cut the transponder key too.

As long as you were there, they could program it for you too.

No Problem

I had a new remote key cut by the local locksmith with no difficulty....

I have had the $20 transponder keys cut at the hardware store with no issue either...

Either way you need to program the transponder to accept the key.

I just went to the local hardware store to do it for me, I had not problems with it, they even did it for free since they knew it was a transponder key and they did not want to be held responsible if it did not work. They cut it, I went out unlocked the door with it, turned over the ignition, then went home and did the voodoo dance to program the key, and it worked like a charm. Of course then Toyota broke my key for me, but they replaced it.
