Cutting 80 series rotors?

So here’s the question and I assume it’s a dumb one cause I’m kinda a dumb guy. Cutting 80 series rotors would you cut it on or off the hub? I’m not 100% positive if the hub would actually fit on the brake lathe as you would with an older say Chevy or for 2wd with the bearings and races integrated into the rotor assembly. Or would it be fine just to chock up the rotor removed from the hub assembly. I’m thinking for absolute best results cutting the rotor still attached to the hub would take some possible variables out of the equation although I’m not actually sure you could chock it up due to the thickness of the hub, and I’m some what doubting any company who makes rotors for a 80 series is taking the set up time to cut rotors that way unless the have some kind of jig to bolt the rotor to…… just some hits blunt thoughts I had. I’m wondering if anyone has experience in this. I’ve cut all flavors of rotors on almost you name it over the years but not for a LC80 feel free to thoroughly berate and ridicule me I love it 😘
 
I have the correct adapters to cut the rotor off the car and off the hub on my bench brake lathe, great results. you could also cut it on the car with an on car lathe or if you had the right adapter you could put the hub and rotor on a bench lathe. just depends on what tools you have.

I got this old hog I chocked it up like this but I’m assuming the better way would use the bearing race adaptors and cut it on hub but one of the adapters is ****ed and won’t slide onto the shaft. I thought maybe the surface rust inside the bore was impeding sliding onto the shaft so I cleaned the s*** out of it and put a radius on the lip of the bore. Still no luck getting the adaptor to slide on so there goes that idea. And for some reason I really don’t like the way I have it chocked on the lathe in the picture.

The frt rortrs you cut on the hub with adapters that fit into the bearing race . The rear rotors you cut as the pictured above.. As a shop for what our labor rates are it is about the same price for us to re surface a rotor as to replace it with a high quality aftermarket rotor. Brakes are one of few items we have no problem using high quality aftermarket parts for . To be honest we have found power stop h/d -towing grade kits seems to brake better and last just as long if not longer than OEM . Plus last time we did cut a rotor (years ago) Napa charged us like 30 bucks .

Just replace the rotors with new OEM for about $80.
I'd do new wheel bearings at the same time.
I gotta do a knuckle rebuild so I got all the toys for that, think I’m gonna have to buy rotors cause one of my brake lathe bearing adaptors is somehow messed up and a new one is around 170$ so the obvious choice is new rotors.

For sure. My labor is “free” if you believe your time isn’t worth anything. I have a lathe so I was just trying to save a buck and I’ve been a mechanic for 20 years and have dem skills. But it looks like rotors are in my future due to the bearing adapter not fitting onto the shaft of the lathe for what ever reason.

That sucks. What lathe do you have > I may a box of ammco lathe bearing adaptors . Not sure if I threw them out when mine died

It just needs to have a one inch shaft where the adaptors ride on, shizz be fairly universal when it come to that sort of thing. But I used my inner Portuguese prowess and I remembered my local O’reillys brake lathe was broken with a bent shaft so I called up my dude and he let me borrow the adaptors I needed. For as much as I’ve been FUBARed by O’reillys in the past with Shizzy parts in the past I may never give those adaptors back 😂

Let me see if I still have them . If I do they are yours for the cost of the ride . I'll try to find them this weekend . Ill never buy another brake lathe
