I picked up a used Kaymar bumper from a MUD member and have started to customize it. The bumper had already been modified by a previous owner. I like the concept of the rear corner protection loops they added, but I don't care for the way they're attached. I will be cutting them off and redoing them at some point. The passenger wing is also bent and needs some adjustment.

The driver's side swing out was originally designed to carry a single military style fuel can. I want to carry 3 Kolpin jugs in this location. (2 x fuel and 1 x water). I think I will also mount my high-lift on this swing out.

16ga steel construction. More to follow.

Nice find! If you don't mind a suggestion, I ran the Kaymar aux rear lights for a while, but found they really were unnecessary and removed them and installed aux back up lights in the bumper light housings. They're just regular driving lights. Got them at wallyworld for like $25, but you could probably find them reasonably priced at any auto parts store. Just measure the openings. They really help backing up at night with the big ass-end on my 80. Here's a comparo pic with my tire swing removed:

Cool idea but I might be installing emergency strobes in those locations.

Your 80 looks like its in great shape!

More progress yesterday.

Looks great! You've got some good ideas and obviously the fab skills to match!

Keep the pics coming, these bumpers are great quality. Never owned a Kaymar, but thats only because I cant afford a new one! Nice score on finding this

More work today. Completed the final version of the license plate mount/light. I also welded the Kolpin jug box to the driver's side swing out. It will work for now but I can already see improvements which will cause me to want me make another one ;)

I made a small modification so that the edge moulding could go ALL the way around the top edge. Small detail but looks much better to me. Also wrapped the padlock with wire looming tape to prevent rattles and protect the paint. Quick paint job with satin black spray cans.

That whole thing is sweet...and those hoops kinda grew on me...I don't think they look bad at all after a couple of views...and sure like they would provide some serious protection.

Nice job!

Did you have to grind something off to remove the swing outs?

No, I just removed the swing arm off the spindle. Take off the nut and washer - it's very similar to a front wheel bearing. Clean off the grease, remove the tire from the swing arm and stuff the spare back in the stock position. You can see the spindles still on the bumper. I found a plastic cap to protect the threads. I just store the swing arm in my garage when not used.

Mine is different,it has a metal cap welded on top of the spindle.I should be able to grind it off.
I really dont need all that weight around the city as well as the rear veiw being obstructed when reversing

Welded?! All the ones I've ever seen have a pressed on axle cap which is easily removed.

yes, welded would be unlikely from the factory I would think. Mine looks like the one above and you just pry it off. IIRC, just insert a screwdriver under the lip and poof...

Nope ,welded is standard from the factory here.Ive looked at a few of them.

are we talking about the same thing?
I meant the cap sitting on top of the nut/bearing on the spindle.
Why would they weld the cap over a serviceable / removeable part? That doesn't seem to make much sense. Am I missing something here?

Yes, we are.

I think its there to stop theft, when the arms are padlocked it would be very difficult to remove the wheels.
I dont think anything in there would need servicing if th bearing have seals to keep dust and moisture out.
Maybe the ones sold in the US are fabricated in a different factory.

Im going to cut the caps off and remove the swing out arm and tyre to gain better visibilty and save on some weight.
Ive come close to reversing into small cars because I cant see them.

I kinda doubt the average thief would figure out how to -and bother to- remove the whole arm. And you can always have a cable from the tire to something fixed.

But on the plus side, with the removable cap it is actually pretty easy to take the whole arm off when you're not planning to hit the boonies/outback soon. Probably takes all of 10 or 15 mins each, if a bit of a greasy job. Way more convenient in town when you need to access the rear frequently.
