I've seen many RTT's mounted off the sides...but I was curious if anyone is running one to unfold off the back that also have dual swing outs and is using an annex as well. Pics would be awesome, I've struck out searching for this.

Thanks

You wouldn't be able to open the back hatch. The ladder would be in the way. With the annex, you'd be totally blocked from opening the back.

It would work with a pop-up type like Autohome Air Top, but you'd still have to move the ladder to open the back.

I've ran it both ways. With my clamshell RTT, I preferred it off to the side, simply because, stored, the RTT orientation was narrower and less susceptible to trail damage.

I don't think it would be impossible to open the hatch with a rear directed RTT. The annex would make it difficult unless it has an opening on the side that faces the vehicle.

It would definitely be close depending on the height of the base of the tent from the roof and if you have a spoiler.

I have mine off the back, set to have the ladder be right at thr end of the hatch. Ability to do is probably depending on your rack and RTT size. Makes it easier for my wife to stand on the tail gate and get the ladder to open it.

I can snap a couple this weekend. I bought an annex, my hopes is it will enclose the back and make two levels that can be slept in. We camp a lot in winter, so with my Big Buddy heater, it should be a solid setup to cook, dress and hangout. I wont have the CVT annex until Cruise Moab, but I will post some pictures of that setup. The RTT is primarily on my 80, though or the most part the trucks are the same as far as this is concerned.

I've been meaning to put my tent up, so if I do I'll flip it out over the hatch and see what it does. The Gamiviti might be too low profile to raise the tent up enough to clear the hatch. we'll see.

I usually have it over the PS so there is unimpeded passage to the rear from under the awning on the DS. The swing out is on the PS.

A weekend trip down to Temple of the Moon and Capital Reef, great cayoneering and back roads to explore. The 100 is taller than my 80, especially with the rack and AHC lift. I had to put the car on Low for the latter to reach the ground. This would be tough with a rear window fairing.

I don't think the annex will work with the hatch open. You could attach it with the hatch and tailgate closed but once attached - no more opening the hatch and probably the tailgate too.

Thanks all for he input. We had made the decision to buy an RTT this weekend when this lil guy should up on Craigslist locally, checked it out and she followed me home! 5ft Ruger Trailer. no tailgate, Mombasa RTT

A few things to address, swap hubs to 5x150, paint to remove some rust, add lighting for RTT/storage tub

Sweet find! I think I actually saw that one on craigslist a week or so ago. Do you mind me asking how much it was? If I remember correctly, it was something like 4k? I'm debating a RTT or one with a trailer.

I know you snagged the trailer, but I wanted to follow up with this in case anyone else had this question in the future. I have been very happy with the Cascadia Vehicle Tents customer service, and following a shipping snafu at Cruise Moab, Bobby from CVT even delivered by annex personally to my house. However, after I started installed it, I feel like maybe it was a waste of money. I have a Mt. Caylee/Mt. Bachelor which is the smallest tent, so there is a possibility a larger tent might be able to fit my needs. The CVT website has ZERO photos of the insides of the their annexes, and absolutely no information about them other than price. So, I was left with a few hundrew dollar gamble that it would work out, and it just fell flat.

Here are my gripes, and they all relate to the design of the back wall (vehicle side) of the tent:

1) The rear side attaches to the bottom of the RTT using the slide slot that the cover uses. So, all the enjoyment you had putting that on when you installed the tent, well now you get to enjoy taking off the cover, sliding in the even larger annex, taking off the annex, and sliding back in the cover. Each and every time you use the annex. If you are like me and think, "maybe I can just leave the annex on...", no, you can't.

2) The rear door of the tent does not extend to the sides of the tent, so there might be a small vehicle that has a square rear end that would fit the annex, but the rear door flat out needs to be wider to be able to create the Double Decker Dirtbag Hilton I had envisioned. I would think this setup would be the primary function of the annex. Being able to cook out of the elements, leave the back of the truck open to either sleep or gear access. However, the designers had some other use or application in mind, which unfortunately falls flat on its face. As you can see, it is possible, but leaves a massive gap under the bumper, which would make using the floor impossible. Bringing me to my next point.

3) The door zips from the bottom up. This makes sense on every other door, except this one. Every vehicle has a gap between the bottom of the car and the ground. IF the tent zipped down from the top it would be possible to seal the gap between the two and leave it open. I can't imagine the scenario where someone would actually be walking through this door. Easy fix, but in my opinion it was just poorly thought out for the actual application.

I also run the CVT tent off the back with the annex. Just like the photos above show, the hatch opens fine. I have done two things that help add a bit more clearance. I have removed the spoiler and I tuck the RTT cover up under the roof rack as much as I can. The cover is removed when the annex is zipped on.

Note: I'm using a frontrunner slimline II rack with the high RTT mounts. I use a 6x6 wood block under the ladder with 33" tires.
