Over the last few years I have gotten quite a few requests to make cup holders for the 70 series cruisers. Now that I have gotten through the holidays I have a little bit of time to possibly squeeze in this project. My first step is to figure out what consoles were offered over all the 70 series models. That means I need you guys to post pics of your center consoles from the different 70 versions so I can get an idea on what I would be working with. Ideally I would love one design that would work for all but that is doubtful. If I could come up with 2-3 designs that would work for all then I would be happy. The 60 series guys needed 3 versions to cover all the designs. I'm guessing it will be a similar project. So let the console pics begin!

For reference here are some 60 and 80 series designs I have. This will give you guys an idea on what I may design for the 70.

Great idea! Seems like the top one would be pretty close.

Here is mine, JDM BJ74 Right hand drive with auto trans:

There is a good amount of space next to the shifter that is cut out of this pic.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the pic. Can I get another pic more zoomed out so I can see more of the seats, console, and dash? Just trying to get an idea on the interior layout.

Ok better pictures this time. (please excuse the dirt and what not)

It may be hard to see but there is a funny hump right next to the shifter. Also hard to tell in these is that the floor is not level, it sloped up to the shifter from the bottom of the console.

This shows the hump a bit.

Pre 1990 70 series had just a tranny hump between the shifter and centre consol that's too shallow to keep much in, too low for an arm rest, and too feeble to stand on if you wanted to poke your head out the sun roof.

Post 1990 had two different consoles that surround the shifter. One for the auto and one for manuals. They have divets in them that some call cup holders. Problem is they are too small and shallow for cups. Good for phones, keys (my keys are on a binder to keep the weight off the ignition), and other random nuts, bolts, and washers though.

Perfect. So what I need to see if a pic of the manual tranny console from the 90+ years. Looks like the auto is pictured above. Does the auto shifter and 4WD shifter sit in the same spot on the tranny hump on the RHD and LHD or is it mirrored?

Also, what is the handle/lever with button on the left side of the tranny hump? Aftermarket or OEM?

Yep PTO lever. Mine is a 89 so pre 90 console configuration.
So the 89 you showed is not the model with a center console? Is the 89 and older have a console between the front seats but no console that wraps around the shifters? Does that mean the 90+ manual and auto have a full center console that goes all the way to the dash and wraps around the shifters?

Does your 70 even have a center console or is it just a tranny hump down the middle?
No center console, no room if you have the 3 seat set up. My 86 70 I had had a center console, was lhd and manual. I think the rest of the models, ones with two front seats, all had a center console, except maybe the troopies.

Wow. This is getting complicated. For the models that did come with center consoles; are there are variations with them? Are there any 70 series models that have a plastic bezel/console that goes all the way to the dash and around the shifters or do all 70 series tranny and t-case shifters just sticking out of the tranny hump with some rubber boot or small plastic bezel?

From what I can tell no pre 90 models had a console that raps all the way around the shifter from the center console to the dash. That should be true for auto and manual trans.

Post 90 have it going from the center console around the shifter to the dash for the auto trans. Not sure about the manuals.

This would apply to 73,74, and I'm pretty sure 77 models. Not sure on the 75s with a bench seat, but my guess based on @coldtaco is that it is just a trans hump.

Hope this helps and I am sure many others will chime/confirm(or correct!) in after the holiday.

The 7X range includes lots more configurations and models then the 6x and 8x. Thanks for taking on this project, any option to help add some versatility to my 74 is appreciated!

Here are a couple of pictures from my 1985 BJ70 (LHD, manual). Importantly, note the ridge that transversely crosses the main transmission hump. You might be able to use it to help secure the cup holder (like I did on my home-brew version - see second photo, with the felt-wrapped blocks of wood)
Hope this helps,
C

If you still need them at that point I can send you some photos of a 1990 HZJ77 on Thursday.
