well,
its been a year and two months since i bought my "new" 1990 FJ62. i bought it out of fullerton california (very rust free, and beautiful, thanks don),while living in alaska, flew a friend from utah (thanks christian) out to pick it up and drive it back to utah where it received a full float rear axle and electronic lockers (from an FJ80) front and rear (thanks bill). the front is complete but the rear still needs to be put together.
it is now (hopefully) on its way to Proffitts Cruisers in delta colorado (thanks dave) where she will recieve a spring over, a cummins 4bta, and either a T400 or 700R4 (thanks proffitts)
next summer my wife, dog and i are flying to colorado to pick up the cruiser, spend a couple weeks in utah and then driving up the alcan to homer where we will catch the ferry to kodiak and live happily ever after (thanks shannon and arrow). at least for the next two and a half years. if you havent driven the alcan, i highly reccomend it in this life time. it is unbelievable. this will be my third trip up. if anybody wants to join us, we will be leaving utah somewhere around july 8th.

i will try to post pics as i get them. (how do you post Pics?)

a big thank you to grease cruiser john, jeremiah proffitt, david connors and will carrol. you rock man.

id like to hear from you guys who have the cummins and see how things are going.

chow baby,
herb

Your Welcome

No problem at all. Glad I could be of some service. BTW, My life has changed a bit, I am now working at Proffitts so, I will probably take part in your conversion :)

It's a sweet setup, you will not be disappointed. I am loving mine more and more each day. Especially when I can go 400 miles and start thinking about filling up!

My schedule is pretty much open, maybe I'll join you on the Alcan.

Later,
John

no way,
that's awsome. when did that happen?
you should see my baby tomorrow. take good care of her for me.
have you done anything new to yours?
i'll let you know more on the dates for the alcan once we get the trip all planned.
good to hear from you.
chow,
herb

it says there too big. re size em?

You can use a free piece of software called IRfanview. Makes it easy to resize.

Very cool. Sorry I have been out of the loop for a few days otherwise I might have been able to drive it down there. Very cool and congrats! Also you want the overdrive but that is going to be a lot of torque on a 700R4. I would go with a a 4L60E but preferably a 4L80E. They can be flashed to shift in synch with the diesel, you just need a different torque converter. That is the route I'd take for an auto. Congrats! Andre

I enjoyed surveying but it kind of sucks in the winter. I got tired of being cold all the time and wading through chest deep snow. Besides, my survey boss goes to Mexico for 4 months every winter and left me to work! I might go back to surveying someday, but right now I am on sabattical.

You know, I work within walking (hell, crawling) distance of a Frito-Lay distribution center. I gotta see if I can get me a van for the 4bt. Anything I should look for, specifically, besides engine mounts? Are there known other engines powering those vans?

no worries, i also owe you many thanks for all the diesel info youve put out there. i spent days reading and re-reading that stuff.
i still dont know about the transmission. i might just for cost reasons use the trans that came with the van, if its in good enough shape, or i might have the guys a proffitts build me one. tell me more about the 4L60 and 80 please.

i dont need "help", driving it to alaska, but we wouldnt mind the compay. were planning on leaving salt lake around july 13ish, heading up through montana and into the rockies.

cheers,
herb

you should check it out. maybe you could get a wrecked one or something cheap. youll also want the hydro brake sys.
these vans had gassers and chev 6.2 diesels as far as i know.

It's definitely worth looking into. I have found that most of the time, Frito Lay has an independent contractor who buys all of the decomissioned vans. Frito Lay will not sell just one. They require that the contractor buys all of them, typically 30+ at a time. That is what I found out at most of the distributors that I called.

They came in gassers (GM V8's), Cummins 4BT's, and GM 6 cyl diesels. They also came with Turbo 400's and SM465's. Good Luck, if you do find a lead on a bunch of them, let em know. We are always looking for more.
