I have a 2001 troopy, 4.2 after market turbo diesel, which has done about 150,000 kms in harsh Norther Territory Australia.

About 2 weeks ago I jumped in and the box was stuck in 5th! Vehicle was parked on a slight slope so I got someone to tow me to the flat, and it popped out.

Later on I could hear a new noise. It sounds like thrust bearing and I noted the clutch was a little funny feeling, rougher..

Yesterday I drove out to Shady Camp towing the boat, and as I drove along, I could hear the regular noise, but it actually settled down a little. About 50km of the journey is on dirt, and I had to change 5 to 4 etc a number of times. A couple of times it was stuck in 5th, or hard to get out, and occasionally hard to get into 4th. When I was going back into 5th, it would, about half the time, make a chunking sound, you know like clutch was not going in properly and I was pushing it into gear.

In all other gears it changes no problems no noise etc. I can drop it into 1st while moving or at the lights etc with no noise at any revs.

I had a new clutch put in about 50 or 60,000 kms ago.

Up here good mechanics are hard to come by so it will likely have to go to Toyota if its not something that can be done by me, and so I would like to make sure I might have some ideas what it cold be before I let them lose on it. They can get very pricy...

Any Ideas wold be appreciated.

If it was one of those $200 light duty type clutches made in China then its probably time to start looking for another.

It could also be something in the gearbox cover where the selector rods are or maybe your shift forks are worn out.

I always take these things to brake and clutch or gearbox specialists rather than mechanics if Im too lazy to fix it myself.
They just seem to do it quicker than mechanics

Thanks for that Rosco,

I changed the oil last night, it sounds better and felt a little better, but I went out to the Daly river today chasing barra. All was good for the 280ks out but coming home, well it started to crunch again.

I will have to go find a specialist.... I would try it myself but I wouldnt even know what i was looking for,

the clutch was a genuine toyota job, so not cheap...

Have you looked at the clutch slave or master cyl for leaks.

If your gearbox is ready for replacement,I think a new one will be about the same as rebuild these days.
Being a 2001 you have the dodgy R151f:mad:

There are some rebuilt ones here cheap,no affiliation. It says 100/78 series, they may mean 105 series

If it is the gearbox, make sure the new one has the upgraded shaft
