Becasue US 40s tend to lean towards the driver side, wouldn't it be better for building new bumpers if the tire was on the passenger side? I ask because I have seen major bumper makers either put it on the driver's side or center. I would think that to counter the lean, a tire should be on the passenger side like the stock 50s-9/73 carriers.

Thoughts . . . .

The latter year 40's I believe had it on the driver's side so as not to obstruct the driver's rear view. Aftermarket models it's probably not an issue due to the larger tires now used. Interesting question though in regards to cruiser lean.

Right hand drive would probably help...

Honestly probably the best thing is to offset the weight of the tire and carrier by putting heavier cargo... tools, etc on the right side. Weight in the stern of a 40 never hurt as far as I am concerned.

I do not think that the location of my spare tire has anything to do with my truck leaning, as the only time that I notice that it leans one way or another is when I throw it into a turn fast....

On the later 40's I think the spare was put on the driver's side so you could open the ambi doors without having to undo the spare carrier. I think you're right, though, that it should either be on the passenger side or in the middle to counterbalance driver weight.

When I had a small 31 spare, my wife made fun of me one day when driing behind me and said I messed up the suspension becasue I was leaning. Now that I have a larger and heaver 35 on the passenger side, no more lean.

My neighbor has a 1966 (that he bought off the show room floor and it still looks like it) and he leans too with his 31 on the passenger side.

my 80, 40 is on the passenger side.

My '79 leans left, even when still on the showroom floor, it does not level out when the spare is off and never did. I seem to remember reading some threads on here about cruiser lean and some people say theirs lean to the right, even though they are LHD with the spare on the left.
