So a new issue has come up. My 2000 is very loud when it first starts moving. Sounds like engine is under a heavy load.

Gets much quieter as the truck goes up gears in trans.

So I have tried these steps and this is what I get. Pwr button makes no difference. 2nd button makes the truck sound normal. All buttons off and shift in to 2nd engines sounds like under a heavy load. Truck in normal drive position truck sounds like under heavy load in first and gets quieter as it progresses through the gears.

I'm guessing I may be having an issue with first gear?

What is weird is if the truck in in drive and the 2nd button is pushed it sounds normal when I take off from a stop. In drive it sounds very loud with the none of the buttons pushed and if I shift in to second it is loud.

My truck just started this behavior early this week.

Any ideas?

Any idea what the RPMs are when it's loud? Maybe 1st gear is slipping. Don't know about the buttons you speak of, but if you shift into 2nd the truck still must go through 1st gear.

Could this simply be fan noise? The viscous clutch on the cooling fan is known to fail, which results in the fan being constantly driven [no viscous slip]. That can make a lot of noise at higher revs which is more noticeable at low speed. Do you hear the noise if you rev the engine to 3000 in Park?

^ this. I was first going to guess cracked exhaust manifold but the fan clutch better explains the quiet 2nd start mode; low rpm = slow fan.

Yep it's super loud.

Yep it's super loud.

That was easy. Now you have some repair options:
1. Search viscous fan in the DIY thread and you'll find all you need to get it fixed. Its easy to remove the fan, separate the viscous clutch hub, and replace it.
2. Extra mud points for refilling/repairing the original clutch, but hardly worth the trouble and the risk of having it fail again.
3. Take it to the dealership, assume the position, drive it home with its nice new spendy repair.

Either way you'll be stealthy quiet after it's done.

Mine does this too. Has always done it. Only when cold or at certain times when conditions are right. I honestly wouldn't worry about it. Lots of GM 4.6 vortecs used to do this too. I'd always hear my neighbor dice their astro van in the morning when it was first
Started up because of the fan whoosh
