I am looking to pick up a Tundra in the spring. Definitely want a crew cab because of the kids. I like the CrewMax (and the 5.7:D), but I'm wondering if we can get away with the regular crewcab and the 4.7. It seems that the mileage difference is only about 1mpg, so thats not as much of a concern. Im more worried about rear seat room for the kids. I'm 6'-5" so the front seat is always all the way back.

So, should I just spend the extra for the Crewmax?

How old are your kids?

I don't have a tundra, but noticed that the rear seat has very little room for carseats. If they are out of carseats, it will be fine. How often will they ride back there? If it is often and for very long, I'd go with the crewmax. If only occasionally, then the double cab will work fine.

Go for the crewmax, everyone I talk to with a crew cab, although very happy regret the crewmax. It will be my next truck without a doubt, 5.7!!!

My kids are 2 and 6. One in a car seat, and one in a booster. Ive been searching for CrewMax, but they are hard to find. We'll see how it plays out.

Do you need the larger bed? CrewMax has a 5' bed, IIRC. Add a tool box, and you're looking at a pretty small bed.

I have the double cab with a 5.7L. I wanted more bed than the crewmax offered, but only have dogs to throw in the back of the cab. While they wanted the crewmax, I was happy with the double cab. There is enough room in there for a car seat and for people to ride, but I wouldn't want to ride across country in it. Mine is a work truck, so I wanted the ability to carry some additional people on occasion, but not on a daily basis.

love the 5.7....although when you're towing, you're looking at single digits (although not much worse than my 7.3L powerstroke that got 12 when pulling my 55). I recently towed my car trailer empty and got 9 - I was kinda surprised that it wasn't a little higher since it was just the car trailer. I got 8.7 coming back with two military trailers on top of it...

I wanted a dc, but ended up with a CM. I got a loaner DC after driving the CM for a while. I like the look of the DC, but the CM is nicer. The rear window is enough difference.

Hope they fixed a bunch of stuff. There is a bunch of little crap wrong with mine. My 5th bumper is rusting again in 3 years. I'm not even considering buying mine when the lease is up in April. I did consider buying a Tundra grade single cab though. Bought an old Cummins instead.

Coming from a crewmax guy, go crewmax! Tons of room, I sit back there and am comfortable. Plus reclining rear seats, and rear window rolls down. Way more room for car seat and kids! HTH.

This is from test driving both with car seat, and havin a "double cab" for a week while the cruiser was in for warranty work!

I have the double cab 4.7 and I'm happy with the space, my kids and 10 and 12 and they find the space good, but since it's my company truck they aren't in it much and I've never been in a crew cab so I can't say anything on the space but I imagine it's grand! Now in regards with the 4.7....go with the 5.7...as you said not enough diff in mileage and way more power, especially if you do any towing. Just my opinion...:)

Thanks for all the replies. We drove both yesterday with my wife (all 5'-2" of her) riding in the back. We decided that the double cab will be sufficient for our needs. I would much rather have a foot more bed space than comfortable kids:p.

Will definitely be getting the 5.7L. Even my wife who is a total mpg nazi said its stupid not to.

Waiting on the dealer to get in an '08 on lease trade-in. Should be here in about a week. It'll get Certified so that it will be warranteed out to 100K miles.

Cant f'n wait.

I'm sorry to hear you won't be getting the roll down rear window! :flipoff2: really though I hope you enjoy your truck. They are really fun, check
out tundratalk.net/forums for a good group of tundra guys. There are a couple others but I like this one best. Congrats!

You will not regret the choice...especially in regards to the 5.7...Congrats!
