I don't normally shoot Coyotes around here because they rarely pose a problem for us. They are numerous in this area but don't usually bother the livestock or anything.

About an hour ago I heard one of the dogs barking. I went to go investigate...and noticed him looking down towards the pasture. We have several horses, one of which is quite old. He sleeps alot, and has some difficulty getting up and "getting started".

Well, "peppy" is laying out there where he normally sleeps, but I can see a pretty good sized Coyote within 10-12 feet of him going back and forth in a half circle. Peppy (the horse), has his head up watching the Coyote but hasn't made any attempt to get up (he's pretty stiff). This Coyote still doesn't leave, even though the Border Collie and my Lab are now barking at him from the backyard. He's only about 150 yds. from the back of my house.

Now, he starts to move closer to the horse.. and puts his head down a little lower. Of course, this causes Peppy some distress, and while I don't think the Coyote was actually thinking he could attack the horse, he was damn sure annoying him.

I went to the closet, got out the 7mm-08 and walked to the back porch. When my Lab sees me with the rifle he really gets upset. Coyote acts like he's only one in the world, doesn't even look up toward the house. I whistle at him and that gets his attention, but all he does is come up a little more erect and turn sideways to me.
This turned out to be a poor tactical decision on his part.

The buzzards are out there eating him right now. The "nerve" of that rascal!

If we have any anti-hunting, animal rights, tree hugging types reading this. Save your breath!

Horse is up grazing with the others now.

Just one concern: rabies. Are coyotes even a vector? I always think of that whenever a wild animal acts weird and is unusually fearless. You might want to take care of that carcass before your dogs get into it, or the rest of the coyote pack...

Good shootin' though!

Skunks are a more common carrier around here. Coyotes can certainly be affected as well, though.

The buzzards should have him pretty well "cleaned up" by the end of the day, there's a ton of them out there right now.

Very strange for a Coyote to hang around to the degree that he did.

Oh well!

Hey, I shoot O.K. , but Texas to New York is a bit of a stretch.

Besides, C-Dan is the "Long Range" shooter here!

It's a bit hard to see the wind flags that far out....;p

Better take up benchrest shooting. It's done at 200 yds., all with flags. They've got some amazing new wind reading devices now that let the codgers that like that game shoot 5 into .200" regularly.

I can sell you a maroon or an electric blue rifle in 6ppc gauranteed to shoot like that for a good price near $16 - $1800. Maroon rifle was built by Fred Sinclair hisself.

ed: oh yeah - they do it a lot at the range in NM - "Raton" something or other.

One of my good friends plays that game. A quarter inch group is s***ty.....

I prefer Service Rifle. Not as accurate but a lot of fun. The benchies are a bit stiff.......;)

My rifle only needs to shoot groups as small as the smallest hogs around here!

Nah, I like accuracy too. The '08 is no benchrest rifle, but it is dual pillar bedded, action and lug are bedded also (acraglass), barrel has been lapped and is free floating, trigger is crisp and clean. It'll put 5 under 3/4" all day, and 1/2" if I really do my part (100 yds.). It shoots better than I can hold it.

If I ever miss anything the size of a Coyote (and certainly hog), then without question.. its MY fault.

The way this Coyote was acting, I could have gone out there with my longbow, he was pretty brazen. He might have let me go "hand to paw" with him, who knows.

They're stiff alright - socially if not physically. So stiff that I felt them unapproachable when I went to Phoenix for one of their matches. My 'long' hair and beard kept all but one or two of them at bay for two days :D

Yep 1/4" is s***ty. Winning scores are needing averages in or below .200 (2/10"), and there are a lot of groups in the .170" at 100 yds. It'd be amazing shooting if it weren't for the scopes and rests allowed and the flags they get to use. Put most of those guys in a 3 position match and most wouldn't get up from prone......LOL!

I look at it as a way to keep shooting even when I should be in a rest home.

Nothing wrong with 7mm 08 Flint. A lot of trophies in silhouette have gone home with people shooting that caliber and you can load it for moose (maybe).

Yeah, these Texas moose are something to reckon with. Even larger than Yukon moose, (except for those found around Plano), those are just Plano Moose!

I shot a 6mm BR last weekend. 5 into .3 and I was happy with that. Too bad I am to lazy to pack an 18lb rifle into the hillls.

FWIW, the 7-08 is my goto rifle now. My 45-70 would be #1 but it is just to purdy to get muddy!

;p :hillbilly

This one was doing the same thing, except his target was a wounded cow with a calf.

I've told those 'yotes to stick to rabbits, but they won't listen!

edit: yikes! Why is that pic so big? Mod help! OK...figured out what "resize" means...hope this is better.

Funny thing about that rifle...didn't shoot worth a darn out of the box. Kinda rare for a Remington. This one had classic verticle stringing from bad bedding.

I had to bed it to get it to settle down, and ended up swapping the trigger because it was 9lbs from the factory (!) and by the time I got it to 3lbs, there was more creep in it than in a holding tank in Brooklyn!

Now it is a nice crisp 2lbs and shoots like it ought to.
