I don't normally shoot Coyotes around here because they rarely pose a problem for us. They are numerous in this area but don't usually bother the livestock or anything.
About an hour ago I heard one of the dogs barking. I went to go investigate...and noticed him looking down towards the pasture. We have several horses, one of which is quite old. He sleeps alot, and has some difficulty getting up and "getting started".
Well, "peppy" is laying out there where he normally sleeps, but I can see a pretty good sized Coyote within 10-12 feet of him going back and forth in a half circle. Peppy (the horse), has his head up watching the Coyote but hasn't made any attempt to get up (he's pretty stiff). This Coyote still doesn't leave, even though the Border Collie and my Lab are now barking at him from the backyard. He's only about 150 yds. from the back of my house.
Now, he starts to move closer to the horse.. and puts his head down a little lower. Of course, this causes Peppy some distress, and while I don't think the Coyote was actually thinking he could attack the horse, he was damn sure annoying him.
I went to the closet, got out the 7mm-08 and walked to the back porch. When my Lab sees me with the rifle he really gets upset. Coyote acts like he's only one in the world, doesn't even look up toward the house. I whistle at him and that gets his attention, but all he does is come up a little more erect and turn sideways to me.
This turned out to be a poor tactical decision on his part.
The buzzards are out there eating him right now. The "nerve" of that rascal!
If we have any anti-hunting, animal rights, tree hugging types reading this. Save your breath!
Horse is up grazing with the others now.
