This past weekend I was retrieving the boat from the ramp at our family beach house and the tide was a bit lower than ideal and on it's way further out so I attempted to haul the boat while I could rather than leaving it on the buoy overnight.

I have done this hundreds of times since childhood and having a 2nd vehicle help is pretty common. The ramp is paved at the beginning but drops off to beach pretty quick and often requires both front and back tires to be on the beach to get the trailer deep enough in the water.

I found myself in this situation for the first time since buying the LC 200 and I would be lieing if I did not admit that I was just a little excited to see this feature earn its price of admission. I was not looking for this beast to do work but rather it was just part of what we do.

With 3,000 lbs of boat behind me and salt water touching the rear tires and everything on the sand I went to 4LO and activated crawl mode. The rest is history. I sat there for 30+ seconds just listening and trying to figure out if I was even moving and then ever so slowly the LC started inching forward and then the front tires contacted concrete and was picked up the pace until I was safely back up in the driveway. Wish I would have taken a pic but at the time I was not thinking about much but hauling out the boat before dark set in and the tide was furhter out. Absolutely amazing . Now if only the 10-11mpg I achieved was as incredible.

The rear springs did not sag much that I could notice so perhaps I won't need to add rear bags to the car. The vehicle tows nicely. The hitch is higher than my 4 runner so I need to get a new ball mount that is a bit lower. I already picked it up just waiting for the ball to come in since I needed something specific. Like the LC it will be very cool and way overkill.

I actually look forward to the next time I am hauling the boat out and am in the same situation. I hope all my relatives who have been stuck in their big Chev Duramax are there so they can see how it is done. Most just kit the peddle a bit too much and you just dig a hole and are buried. Not the LC with Crawl Mode. :D

Did you try it without crawl control on?

Maybe in your situation crawl control works, but I've personally found it way too obtrusive and dangerous. Especially with a wheel 2 feet in the air, the rocking sensation it generates is highly unwanted!

Glad the crawl control worked for you!

If I would have tried without crawl control it would have only needed to be one spin of the tires and the tires would have sunk in the sand and the strap to the front tow point would have been needed. I know this is not the intent of crawl control but it sure works ideal in this situation. This will be a situation I will see many more times this summer so it will be used again.
Maybe next time I will remember to take a pic.

I think alot of the guys on here would love to see a video if you can make.....I know I would like to see it.

On a side note, if you try it without crawl control....ATRAC should keep you from burying a tire in the sand

Funny, my 1987 HJ60 diesel in 4lo does that too. Pull the knob on the dash if you want a faster crawl speed. Oh, and it gets 17mpg city/21 highway... screw progress, give me diesel.

Crawl control works nicely and its one of them things I'd love to have in my tool box when 4 wheeling. Atrac is what you want when your tires are 2 feet in the air. The right tool for the job.

Crawl Mode Is Incredible

Even though I can't say that this Crawl thing has ever taken me through some obstacle I wouldn't have been able to overcome without (it was close once, please read below). Nor can I say that it has been indispensable to get out of trouble on any occasion, I have to agree (it is incredible indeed)

I wheel my 200 quite hard, and often use the Crawl Mode just for fun. I mean, it is really fun to see this huge truck slowly overcoming difficult obstacles as if by magic, and under a lot more control than my right foot will ever be able to exert.

Once, I had to cross a river or creek, maybe one foot deep and 40 or so yards wide with a gravel bottom. We knew from experience there was no way I could make it through without getting stuck. Therefore, we rigged a 70 series that happened to be on the other side, with a tow strap in order to pull me out as soon as it happened.

As I approached the crossing, I decided to engage the Crawl Mode, and much to our surprise the heavy truck started crossing very slowly, but surely. As this happened, all the guys around and walking beside me started asking things like: Is it moving by itself? or, Are you really not stepping on the throttle? and so on…

That’s when I decided to raise my feet as high as I could and open the door to let them see for themselves… Right then the Crawl Mode disengaged (opening the door does that) and I could actually feel the Land Cruiser sink a few inches!... Instantly!... It took us a few minutes to stop laughing and start the recovery work, which was quite harder than anticipated because of the unplanned delay.

Additionally, this Crawl Mode is also great for those coming behind you, as damage to the ground is minimized on muddy or loose soil, making it easier for them to follow a 200 series in Crawl Mode than any other 4x4 that has to go through spinning tires and digging deep holes or tracks. This means it’s also great for bragging about treading lightly…

Indispensable? no… Necessary? I don’t think so.

But my 200 series just wouldn’t be the same without it.
