Dis a search and came back with zero results. Has anyone removed pully without SST's? Im replacing all rad hoses and fan belts and thought since i was there could replace the fron seal and time cover gasckets. pleawe help.

Did one on a Land Rover once and used a very long bar and heaps of muscle. Soak the nut for half an hour in some sort of lub spray. Leave the car in gear with the hand brake on.

is the question "removing the nut" or removing the pully once the nut is off ?

The nut (45 mm I think) : use starter , with breaker bar resting on frame- just a kiss, don't let her wind over....

Pully, not sure...: heard of prying from behind w/ two screwdrivers ( guess long big ones...) , maybe a pulley puller...

Use a puller, i am not sure which one I used but that would be the way to go. Is your timing cover leaking? Those covers are very sensitive to overtightening, so try not to go too far as to bend the cover mounting surface. I have a small leak out of mine after my rebuild, I should have just replaced the cover. I assume you have removed the radiator, if not that would gie you the most room to do this work. Good luck.

Yeas I was mostly concerned with the nut. The whole thing would spin if I start unscrewing it right?

After using a Snap-On, IMM460 1/2" drive impact socket to remove the nut,

I use this....two 10mmx1.25x120 bolts and thick flat washers....(bolts are 2F alt mounting bolts FYI...they are also used when using this identical set up to pull a one piece t-case off of the transmission) :)

No have not removed radiator yet. Is it necessary or just very convinient? I already have rad hoses, but am still waiting on belts from C-dan. Cant realy dissassemble untill im ready to install parts as it is a true daily driver.

FJ40 thats what I needed to know. I guess I wasn't beeing clear in my question. Im kinda ESL. Thanks to all.

That puller bolt is too short.
It will barely poke through the radiator core.
How you gonna get a socket on it?;p

Sorry Jim, I just grabbed one from the drawer.... :) That long one works really well on the tcases and on the cam drive gear on the crank... :)

It is best just to get it out of the way, and lower if not eliminate the risk of collateral damage to it by trying to work around it.

If you pull the timing cover off (sorry must yell here) YOU MUST REFER TO LOCATION AND LENGTH OF BOLTS WHEN RE-MOUNTING. The bolts will go in the wrong holes and distort the plate behind timing gears, forming an unrepairable leak as 60+psi oil shoots into the seam. I had this happen and lost more than 1qt in 300 miles.

I had a broken 3 groove pulley and tried to pull myself, but lacked the best tool set. I let a local mechanic finish the job (wrong). I had given him my FSM's (and his repair books showed the same procedure) which the moron did not follow. 168,000 mile engine had to be torn down to repair.

personally, if the timing case ain't leakin', do not pull it off.
