Recieved a call today, sounds like the owner of a 80 series ran his rig out of water. Spent 600 at toyota, they installed a thrermostat and cleaned out went through the intake looking for something?

Guy drives it home, running rough and sputtering. Got worse and worse until steam from under the truck and water out the tailpipe.

Head cracked?

or head gasket!!

I agree on the HG. It would take a lot more abuse to crack the block I think. It still sucks for the guy, but the dealer should pony up since they did the "repair"

ooooh, this is where it hurt but also may help to have had it done at Toyota... might get a new engine out of it...

Sorry, my wording of this dilema was incorrect.

The owner ran the truck out of water, gauge never reach the red but definitly overheated the engine.

Toyota informed him he was very low on water, they then changed out the thermostat and cleaned out some of the intake ports?

The truck is performing horribly, water out the exhaust.

Thanks

sounds even more like the hg.

 OK, so Toy didn't do the job then, they just checked if after the overheating incident, is that it?
Leave it to the 'nucks to speak british eh...? :D

You got her Pontiac........

Yeah, but still, the dealer sees the system is low on coolant, does and R&R on the thermostat, can see the water coming out the tail pipe and smell the antifreeze burning, and sends the guy on his way telling him to be sure and top it off?!

That's criminal behavior  :censor:

Yep ya you betcha eh!

I was wondering when another good HG scare was going to come. It seems like there are a lot more newbs poking around the board and they probably haven't been indoctrinated with the HG paranoia.

HG....boo! Save up, it's only a matter of time.

(I actually do scare myself a little just joking about it, :knock: :wood:)

I have only seen one warped head and no cracked heads on the 1FZ engine so far. I would bet some hard earned money on the head gasket going south. If the dealership can not spot this I would think they could not do the repair properly. He may want to find a good toyota shop besides the dealer. later robbie

Thanks, just the information my customer will like to hear.

What kind of hrs are involved with a re and are?

Rob

Lots and lots. Probably 2 long days if you've not done it before. Everything's laid out in the factory manual.

Depends alot too on what all you do... just the basic HG replacement or hitting other things while you're in there.

Based on what I've read here..., shade tree - 2 to 3 days. Robbie could probably to the basic HG replacement in a day.

We book out 15 hrs to do the job in our shop with out the radiator R+R. Usually leave in the radiator if it does not need to be pulled, most radiators will be pulled if any pluging is occuring as we will not warranty the repair unless the cooling system is up to spec's. This also may need the Fan clutch replaced at the same time. later robbie
