Hi Mudders.

just purchase a a new-to-me 2015 LC. Super stoked!

I do need to figure out a way to keep stuff in the cargo area covered for theft deterence. I couldn't find anything posted on Mud (though I'm sure there is!)

Any ideas?

Thanks
Sani

Obviously, something beyond just tossing a blanket over them!

This is not likely what you were thinking, but it is incredibly effective for theft deterrence:

Dark window tinting.

I have limousine-dark tinting from my passenger row, rearward. I worried that it would be a nuisance for visibility, but it really hasn't been. Night or day, you can see OUT from the inside, but people absolutely CANNOT see inside. Not even in bright daylight or darkness.

I keep mega-electronics on the backs of my front seats, and with the tinting, they are essentially hidden, along with anything I might have in back like rifles, computers, etc.

Dark tinting has other benefits:
-Keeps the truck FAR cooler in the heat of summer (no sun-beams blasting on the interior)
-Protects interior material from UV break-down
-You are not limited to hiding what fits below a rear cover. EVERYTHING back there becomes invisible, even if stacked to the ceiling.

I've never been a fan of dark tinting, because I think my brain always associated it with thuggish cars and bad attitudes (revealing some personal bias I guess), but wow. I love it now.

Also... It really does provide amazing privacy while driving, or sleeping in the back. Probably saved me a cell phone ticket or three when I pick up na incoming call, or set Google maps.

Here you can see the look. Front row is also tinted, but light. Second row and back is super dark.
I'll try to post an image of the view from inside to show visibility.

I've wondered about this covering too. My wife's old RX330 had it, and her current NX300H has it as well. When I was looking at 4R's, they had it as well. For some odd reason, the LX does not have it.

Markuson, how dark is "limousine" tint? Is it 0%?

I can't remember what % they called it... I'll try to find out, but I suspect "limousine" is a commonly-used term in tint-installation shops.

I was surprised how well I would still see out. Dark to be sure, but I'm super happy with it for the reasons written above.

I think you can go as dark as you want from the passenger row back. The law applies mostly to driver windows and windshield. Everything else is like the back of a cargo van.

Front windows may be no darker than 15%, but every state is different. Your tint shop can tell you the regs.

Ya, the back is never an issue... Otherwise, vans with no windows at all would be a problem. I wonder if police carry some testing unit for tinting that indicates. My assumption has been that if they can't see the driver easily in daylight, you'll be ticketed. Probably some wiggle room on % in real world enforcement.

We just ordered a 2018 LX 5 seater to replace one of our 17 LX.

It has a factory rear cargo cover. You can see the pic here.

I saw a couple of add-on cargo covers for sale on AliExpress (basically the same sort of thing as found in the 4R). I have no idea of quality, but did notice that they would not work unless the 3rd row of seats was removed. Also the pics show they had to add screw-on brackets to the interior trim - meaning holes would be left in the interior trim if ever removed. The add-on brackets are the pockets that the ends of the cover fit into but would normally recessed on an OEM cargo cover. Also the hooks that capture extended cover at the rear hatch area are screwed to the interior trim. IIRC they were around $100 shipped to the US. Chinese quality being what it is it would be a bit of a crap shoot to order one - and of course you would have to be willing to put a few holes in the interior trim.

Love the cargo cover, but obviously, no third row seats. I'm jealous. Our 2015 200 has the 3rd row seats (removed & in the shed) and there are no factory tidbits to allow the use of a cargo cover.

I just use dark grey blankets to cover stuff.

Yeah we don’t need two LX with third row. Having the 18 LX as 5 seater is a perfect compliment for our 17 8 seater :)

Not to mention the 5 seater is dirt cheap relative to the 8 seater (especially with the ridiculous discount my dealer gave me on the ordered car)

Thanks Ryan.. that's was I had in mind. I saw it on AliExpress but it was out of stock. I wasn't sure if it would work with 3rd row seats folded but no up or not. But then I realized it requires drilling so scratched that plan. I think I'll have to go with the tinting approach!

Thanks man, I had not thought of that option but I think I'm going to go with your idea. I like that it would no limit what I can keep in the cargo under a cover.

... and nice rig!

I’ve looked at those. Do you keep them on while driving or stow them? How small do they pack? Do they insulate from cold during winter? Sorry for the barrage of questions.

I keep the rear side windows covered but you can leave them all on if you want.

I have the full window kit (all windows have a shade including the windshield). They come in two nylon bags about the size of a thin pillow for your bed.

Haven't tried them in the winter but if I had to guess, probably a little but not a ton.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping for some cold insulation for sleeping in the truck in the winter.

Yeah, same as Tony. The rears stay on all the time generally because I keep gear in my truck all the time and can't see out the back anyway. I leave the middles and fronts handy and tend to put them up in our parking garage if the truck is going to sit for over 24 hours and definitely when staying at hotels on the road.

Great for security, great for camping.
