Alternator is also pretty easy:
Check here: Tim is in the 4runner forum and credit goes to him to do this nice video about rebuilding it. Also, notice in his early part of the video he gives a credit to me for starting a thread on how to repair the alternator with pictures.
Enjoy:

Bought a used OEM one off ebay about a month ago. It looked like it was in great condition and the LC it came out of had low miles. Plus the seller had a 1 year warranty on the used part. Installed it myself and it worked like a charm. $45 shipped.

Man, that video is great! I was thinking of replacing my alternator on my Xterra, but now I may try to replace the brushes.

I did my own and make sure that you're very careful removing the electrical plug. Mine was caked in dirt, etc. and broke on the way out. Had to wire in a replacement plug (from ebay). Should have taken my time with the removal.

Mine died in the middle of a highway and left the family stranded 75 miles from home on our way to a festival.

After a good samaritan helped pull me off the road, an Uber and car rental to get home we're wrestling with the repair. The local shop is charging 4 hours of labor ~$500.
The want to put a remanufactured Denso and an Interstate Lead Acid in for a $950 total. I can't borrow a truck/trailer and get out there and tow it home or worse yet pay $400+ for a flat bed to get it back to Virginia. Then I've got to get to it {TIME = $$$$}. So... rather than stock. I'm having a Mean Green Alt and an Odyssey Extreme Battery shipped in and letting them do the work. I estimate an $1100 repair bill and another trip to Maryland to recover and pay, but I'll have my truck back and it will never happen again. I have AHC so there is no room for a dual battery set up. With lights, winch, stereo, comms etc. I'll have all the power that I'll need.

I'm getting some intermittent bearing noise from mine, so I've ordered the brush holder and bearings and will rebuild when I do my TB service this winter. The way my preventive thinking goes, at 185k miles if I'm digging into the ALT to replace the brushes makes sense to replace the bearings as well. Here are the part numbers and prices I paid.

mine just died. 275k miles on the lx470. lexus dealer is doing it for 700 bucks. I was in a hurry... its the wifes car, yada yada yada... In hindsight, I wish I proactively did the swap with a used low mileage unit. Folks, if you haven't done it, I recommend you proactively service the unit.

Doing alternator is easy from the top, no need to get under. Here's my summary.

I took my chances and i did it on the super cheap...

Sequoia 150A from a crashed truck = $60

Came with the square connector and everything..

The installation is cramp (I was not Able to lift the front end a foot or so what will had helped a lot) But is not a difficult job even with big clumsy hands..

Massive amounts of accurate information around here but very self explanatory
