Okay I'll play. If you want quotes go ask a half dozen mechanics for thier shop labor rate.. if you want awesome advice use THIS forum. I have saved hundreds... soon to be thousands of dollars... searching and learning and listening.

However, if you want to jump on someone for offering honest advice, (Driley) your call, but don't expect folks to extend any more offers... again your call.

The parts and cost of parts info has been posted, but not the labor costs nor an estimation of hours of labor if done by a mechanic. Most of you guys plan to do this job yourself -- I'm trying to get a reasonable idea of how bad I'm going to get screwed at the dealership. I searched for that info -- I got a bunch of info about how much the parts cost. That's why I'm asking. But thanks for the help.

And who is CDan?

I can't wait to see someone come unglued for me asking a question. This should be good.

(I've ordered from Dan before. I know how to use the search feature, but pardon me for not being as hard core and glued to this forum the last few years as you seem to think everyone should be.)

I've gotten quite a bit of helpful advice over the last few years from this forum. His answer to my question was tantamount to "use the search tool". That's fine if my question has already been answered, but it's clear that he either misunderstood my question, or is implying that I should suck it up and do the job myself. Either way, that's not what I'm looking for. I don't have time to do it myself right now. Maybe I should have just started my own thread, but I thought it was a simple question that could have been answered within the context of the OP. I know what the dealers are going to charge me -- I called around. I was trying to get some input from a few people who had already gone this route and could help me determine if my estimates were in the right ballpark or if I needed to keep shopping.

I did not mean to step on any toes and would rather not have this thread turn into chat (I am sure the OP would not want that either). I have mentioned before, in other threads about front axle rebuild (search: getting ready front axle rebuild) about a quote from my trusted, Land Cruiser owning, mechanic. I would not trust a dealership to work on my 1994 Toyota. I realized a long time ago dealing with BMWs that dealerships really have no interest in continued learning about their brand vehicles much after the factory warranty has expired. It is not financially practical to have every new mechanic learn the whole product line. There are exceptions, but not many in my experience.

Find a mechanic that knows about the birfield design and has done a rebuild. Any shop that claims less than 8 to 12 hours shop time for both sides probably has never done this job and will only do the bare minimum.
