Coming to Charleston for the Cooper River Run this weekend - yeah, me and my 40,000 bestest friends - but it's a chance to get out of N.C. and see some ole college buds. Staying on James Island Friday night - any recommendations on a good oyster/beer joint that my 12 year old daughter would feel comfortable in?? Recommendations for Fri. afternoon touristy stuff given that 40,000 others are wanting to do them to? BBQ BOY - where is your restaurant - we might try to stop by - you working this weekend? What would you do in Charleston if you had 8 hours to play and a 12 year old to entertain?
Thanks,
William

Carrige tours are always a good bet. As far as oysters, I had some good local clusters at Locklears in Mt. Pleasant a little while ago. It's a little late in the season for me, though. But I did see the sign out front yesterday.
We kind of become hermits when this thing comes around, and don't hang out much downtown anyway.
Also you can try the Aquarium, the Yorktown, or Fort Moultrie on Sullivans Island. Maybe even take a boat ride to Fort Sumter.
Lots to do,maybe someone else has some other ideas.

Take her to the James Island county park. I would just try tot take it easy and enjoy the background scenery with your kid that weekend. Charleston is beautiful, going downtown will make it pretty miserable.

Hello,
I'm at 1602 Savannah Hwy. I'm about 3 miles South on Hwy. 17. The name of my restaurant is Bessinger's BBQ.
Hwy. 17 runs straight into downtown. So I'm 3 miles from Downtown. I'll be in and out all weekend so just ask for Michael. I look forward to meeting you.
Another option while your here is the Flowertown Festivle or some people call it the Azalea Festivle. It's all weekend and is about 30 minutes north of Charleston. We take our kids every year but your daughter could get bored being a 12 year old but I doubt it.

Awesome recommendations!!! And nobody said they were running :) Gonna look over the links tonight - have a feeling the Azalea Festival is gonna be something my wife is into.

Thanks for the replies and here's hoping the bridge holds up under the masses.

I'm loving that Red's Icehouse - definitely on the hit list for Friday night. Bowen's also looks AWESOME!! Will let you know if we make it there - thanks for the tips. Michael, if we're able to get down to Bessinger's, it will likely be on Sat. for a little lunch. Hope we're able to get it all in. Thanks again!!

Had a great weekend. Spent Friday afternoon at Red's Icehouse up at Shem Creek, followed by dinner at Bowen's Island Restaurant. Saturday, after the run, went to Bessinger's for some BBQ. It was all good. Thanks for the recommendations!!

Very cool man. Thanks for coming by. We were slammed and I mean slammed. I am not sure I could have come up to say hello if you made yourself known.

Will try to post the other pics - GREAT TIME - the recommendations were perfect and the bridge run was better than I expected. Crowded but still had space to run without tripping over everyone. Got to see some old friends and catch up. And we finished under an hour for our 6.2 miles.

Couple of cruiser sightings - oliveish green 40 that we saw Sat. trying to turn onto 17 south (from the east side of 17) of the Ashley on our way to Bessinger's - top off - family roll cage I think - and hi-lift jack mounted on side - this was around 11:30

And then red 40 with hard top on and white rack on cap - seen on Folly Beach Road - turned into a BP I think or a gas station - a girl and a guy.

Lots of 80's around it seemed.

Michael,

We were at Bessinger's around 11:30 to 12:00 or so on Sat. - starting to get busy by the time we left - I did ask one of your wait staff if you might be around and she said you weren't in - the 'que was tasty and everybody loved the slaw.
