Found this picture the other day while searching Google Images for fire pits. Looks like an interesting concept and fairly easy to make.

I use the hanging grill/griddle with a three leg support and chains to adjust the cooking height. I think your idea might be as stable and probably easier to adjust.

Surrounded by combustible materials and an open fire. Great concept and an ideal way to burn the state down. I know it's not yours, I like the idea, just not the execution.
