Cool Cruisers Pewter Two-stage Paint, What Primer?? (1 Viewer)

I am prepping several items for pewter on my 1978 FJ40 restoration.

The instructions from CCOT are as follows (I bolded and underlined):

• DIRECTIONS
  Silver / Pewter Paint Interior / Exterior Trim Paint Kit
• Prepare Surface and Prime with Acrylic Primer.
• Silver / Pewter Paint Mixes. 4 parts paint. 3 parts reducer. 1 part hardener.
• Mix only as much as needed.
• Use mixture within 12 hours. If refrigerated should last up to 48 hours.
• Apply paint with spray gun for best / original results.
• Apply 2 or 3 coats allowing 10 minutes dry time between coats.
• Ideal temperature for application is 75 to 90 degrees F.
• Clean up with lacquer thinner.

I started spraying and sanding primer (Krylon rattle can). It sprays and sands well, but will this CCOT Pewter kit eat/destroy the Krylon rattle primer? If so, what primer should I buy? I don't understand all of this lacquer, epoxy, self etching, acrylic blah blah blah.

There are so many product on the market it can get confusing! I checked CCOT website and it states the pewter paint is acrylic enamel. Enamel is pretty forgiving so it can be painted over either enamel or lacquer primer. Epoxyprimer is good for sealing and is a tough primer, but if your doing a rattle can primer it's ok too. Remember that the top coat is only as good as the sanding prep so take your time, make it as smooth as possible, clean and degrease prior to the final top coat.
