The cool box in my 2011 LX570 has been acting up. It seems to only work if it is very hot out, which it has never done before. If it isn’t very hot out, the button lights up (does not flash), I hear a slight click sound, and then no cool air blows out.

Does anyone know what may be wrong and how to fix it? Thanks in advance!

It is usually the fan. @Markuson has a thread with pics of his teardown iirc.

I had my dealer replace mine, and they said it was a much much bigger job than they quoted me for. I think I laid around $300-350. The part itself is $40, but the access requires removing a lot of parts.

Gotchya, I don’t mind spending some time to save a lot of coin. I will look for the part number to the fan. Thanks!

I'd look through Markuson's thread. I think the "correct" procedure also requires a drain and refilll of ac lines.

My thread wasn’t really a walk-through, but more of a *warning* about what a complicated mess it can be. I had no guidance when I did it which surely made it harder… -But my general conclusion was that if your dealer is willing to do it for $3-400…might wanna let them.

Seems like an odd failure mode. I wonder about the A/C system. It has to be on and working correctly for the cool box to work. Are you getting cool air out of the HVAC when it’s not very hot out? Is the refrigerant charge ok? The cool box fan is a constant speed, always on fan and I’m not sure why it would run only when ambient is very hot. If the fan runs right under some conditions, wouldn’t it be ok?

That’s what I was wondering. Yes, the AC is working great and blows nice cold air. I do agree with the above posts that the fan motor is probably wearing out.

Thanks for the insight. I just hate that dealerships want to charge a $150 (or more) “diagnostic fee” just to tell you what you already know, on top of the repair costs…

If it were me, I’d order the fan replacement prior($40-50) and hire them specifically to replace the fan. It will take them several hours at least. They should have that job in their service database. If it turns out to be the controller, that’s much more easily accessible near the floor under the main center console y the second row foot well. I’d put money on it being the fan though…
