I have had my M416 sitting in my garage un-finisghed for way to long.

Some time ago I got a write up from Erik on how to convert the 5 lug to a 6 lug bolt pattern.

Now its time to get off my butt and get it done.

I have attached the write up as well as a pdf that has the blown up parts from SOR's web site.

The thing I am trying to figure out is exactly which part I need from the pre 1975 front drum brake of the cruiser.

I have not had all this apart in a while so I am having a hard time envisioning it.

Has anyone else done this conversion?

Chris

Here is a before and after of the M416 my wife bought me for my birthday several years back.

I had been eyeing this thing for a couple of years in a driveway I would pass by on occasion.

My wife stopped and talked to the owner one day and he told her that he and his wife were just discussing how it never gets used and that they should sell it.

So, my wife bought it for $300 and since I did not have a pintle hook hitch at the time and for the surprise factor the guy delivered it to my house. (nice small town folk)

The majority of the work is done now just to get it rolling on bigger tires.

OOO Gonna love hearing about this :)

Not to sound TOO stupid, but is there any chance you can just find a spacer that converts?

Either that or buy a local FJ60 rear axel and drop it under there?

I had the same issue and just decided to buy a custom made axle from ABC trailer supply. I got a 3500# custom axle with the 6x5.5 bolt pattern with bearing buddies for $170ish shipped to my door. For all the hasstle that you are likely going to experience trying to convert, it might be easier to drop the money and be done with it.

The spacers add 4"'s of width.

If I just swap out the axle then I loose the parking break.

I think it would be very handy to keep the brake.

pn 080-14A-U is what your looking for.. i've got a call in to a buddy to see if he has one.. most of the time they're free for the taking. I JUST recycled one sorry.. went with chef's wagon shell

been a LONG time since i've seen that article.. thank you for posting it up..
sorry i didn't put prices on that list..

Thanks Erik.

Let me know if you get a hold of your buddy.

I could grab them on my way out of town if possible.

I'll be leaving around 6pm I hope.

Chris

Im glad you posted up.

I thought I was looking at #36.

I would have been wrong.

you reuse the spindle that's built into the m416 axle. reuse the locknut and locking washer. you need the new wheelbearings to go into the cruiser part and will reuse the "oil seal" that's between the cruiser bearings and the m416 spindle.

leave the parking brake stuff on the m416 axle and will reuse the drum.. now that i know more about what i'm doing i would weld the old holes shut and drill the new ones. and probably spin the m416 drum on a lathe.. ya learn a few things over the years and have access to cooler tools over the years.

just about anyone that has converted to disks will have that part.. Rob in our club will be converting his 45 as well soon so we can grab those off his if nothing else comes up. he'll probably read this he would have no use for the old stuff as he totes his behind the bus.

I'll be back in town September 13th for a couple of days.

Maybe something will happen by then.

Chris

Eric is going to look tomorrow and I'll check with Rob

Chris, I"m over in Eville and sold one of my 60's to a guy that has been sitting on it for a long time doing nothing. I just bought back the 2f and tranny for pennies and I"m guessing the axles are next. I can ask him if you would want complete 60 axle?

Matt,

Is that Nick you are talking about?

I think he was going to put a diesel in that 60.

You own the coffee shop. Right?

I stopped in one day a while back when your buddy from the fire dept. was there.

I drive the red 40 that runs through town once and a while.

We should hook up some time. If I recall you said you were in the process of building a 60.

If the 40 and 60 pre 1975 are the same I think I will give him a call.

Chris

Saw Nick today he's still, well sitting on old blue. I sold the Bakery still own the coffee company and yes we should hook up. I have a motor at Duckworth's being finished and will need an extra set of hands putting it in, nudge nudge hint hint. Send me a PM and I'll pass on my numbers I would LOVE to come check out your 40 and Doug is selling his white 60 ( fireman) he's breading again and needs a 3rd row seat so I'm trying to find him a good 80.

When I was parting out an 80 series, I found out my rear axle housing was bent. I kept the spindles and hubs though with the intention of building it into a trailer axle at some point (not likely to happen) - but the 80 series (later) is full float so you can just use the spindles connected to your axle and then either use the 80 series e-brake, or use the disk brakes and turn them into an e-brake arangement. Not sure if that's harder or easier or more expensive or cheaper than your plan, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Eagle, Thanks.
I think I want to keep the same axle for now.
Less work with the same result.

Rob,
That would be great. I will keep checking around for now.
If you think about it when you tear it down let me know.

Thanks

Chris
