Hello all,

I gotta admit, I am stumped.

I have a 4BD swapped fj60 that I am so, so very close to getting on the road as a reliable driver. Part of that is getting the tach to work.

I have a gas OEM tach out of an FJ60 as well as a diesel OEM tach out of a BJ60.

I also have Dakota digital SGI-100BT signal converter.

On the engine, there is a tach sending unit on starboard side of the timing cover that picks up from the gear that drives the injection pump (which is the only factory speed signal I can find). I’ve hooked that up to my oscilloscope, and while it gives out a speed signal, it is incredibly weak and not very clean.

I hooked that up to the Dakota digital signal converter but just couldn’t get it to work.

So, I took apart my alternator and soldered a W signal wire on to one of the windings. Reassembled the alternator and hooked it up to my scope. Lo and behold, it is producing a strong clean signal that varies linearly with RPM. Awesome!

I hooked that up to the Dakota digital converter, but still nothing. I can get the 2k test output to show on my gauge clearly, but it just sits at 0 when running.

I’ve tried every combination of settings on the converter box as I could think of, but nothing.

I do notice that while the W signal from my alternator is strong, it peaks at 0.3V amplitude, so maybe that isn’t enough to feed the converter?

I will mention that I have noticed, like others, that only the high output on the Dakota digital box works for the fj60 tachs.

Anybody have any idea how to make this work? Thanks!

Got a new alternator today, but it is still only giving a 0.3v signal on the stator winding. Any guys smart with alternators know how to fix this? I tried a small opamp, but that added way too much noise.
