This is the shape of the storage area (except deeper) in coolbox equipped LCs and LXs.

oh, the tray is there. my rant was on this really large console space, and it is used in the least imaginative fashion. It is prime real estate, one of the few places the driver can get to, but it has a lift out tray, and it is quite deep. it's good for putting peanut m&ms in, or ponchos, or RSE headphones, but can't use it for stuff you need to get while you're driving, because it takes attention, and possibly two hands to use.

Example: my last car, minted in 2005, had split flip top storage (sunglasses, chargers, etc), full flip bottom storage (rectangular shape cds, dvds, maps I guess), and a 12v outlet inside the box. To be fair, this car did not have 9 inches of ground clearance, or seat 8.

Even better, it had two, two level cup holders (fit short and tall drinks).

All this in a package 1/2 as wide and shorter vertically than the LX.

I guess we can't complain about having too much storage space, and I will say the sliding armrests are convenient, and the hinge on the box is very nice and strong. It could have been more.

It won't fit a small laptop, either, which could have been a good idea for a vehicle without a trunk/hiding place.

It does fit the 18 (should be standard from factory it fits so well). First aftermarket part I bought a couple weeks ago after picking mine up.

Is there one of those locking storage safes available that can be inserted here like on the Tundra and Sequoia?
The Leatherman case reminds me of the time when mine went missing at the car wash. Ugh.:bang:

I ordered a Console Vault for my Excursion last week and emailed an inquiry about the lack of one available for ANY model LC or LX.

They responded with this:

"Hello,

we are working with Toyota right now. Hopefully we will have it very soon.

Thank you

Antonietta

Sincerely,
Console Vault"

But since like 90% of the 200s have the Cooler Box, I don't know what their solution will be.

Idea:

I’m thinking one cool idea would be a false-bottom interior for the coolbox. In other words...a small platform that allows storage (or refrigeration) above...but that leaves a space at the bottom sufficient for a firearm, or other valuables.

Sometimes the best security does not involves locks. Sometimes locks actually CAUSE theft, where a firearm hidden below a few Diet Cokes is extremely effective.

I’m actually thinking about trying to fabricate something along those lines.

I don't know, I think with firearms, you have to err on the side locking it up. I could live with the fact a thief stole my gun that was locked up a lot easier than I could if one of my kids or another stumbled upon it by digging through the console and ended up causing harm with it, especially knowing that if it had been locked in the console, the kid wouldn't have been able to get to it.

I agree. I’m not suggesting it is a solution for child safety.

In general, though...as soon as a thief sees an internal, locked compartment...that locked compartment becomes their immediate focus. Not good.

Diet cokes do just the opposite.

Perhaps a LOCKED false bottome would be the ultimate solution.

The other variable is whether you seek a quick access solution...or just a theft prevention solution. Those are two distinct goals. Some solutions address both, but doing both without inviting attention is tricky.
