Considering a 96 LC, does this seem like a decent deal?

"1996 Toyota Landcruiser
6 cyl, awd, power everything, moonroof, CD, step rails, exc. leather int., tow hitch, orig. owners, strong buggy. Rust free, Beautiful cond for 10 yr. old vehicle, Book Private Party $9,900. No reasonable offer refused."

I know about the 110K miles service, I am not sure yet if that has been completed.

Any concerns w/ this sort of mileage?

I don't see the mileage listed. At 110K, it should command high dollar. Anything under $10,000 would be reasonable.

There's a one-owner '97 with 124k miles, leather interior, that's been in my local paper for a couple of weeks (at least it was still there a couple of days ago) at $8,900 which is below "book" value. This is in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, about 150 miles south of Chicago where any Land Cruisers are few and far between. The one you asked about looks to be in the ballpark price-wise but I don't really follow the 80/100 market. Shoot me an email (plenzini@uiuc.edu) it you're interested in the one here and I'll see if I can get a phone number for you.

Sorry, 130K miles on the truck, sounds like it has been well cared for.

It also has lockers...

From the seller...

"L/C has been in my family since original purchase at Maine Mall Motors.
Original sticker price was $46,000. Car has been maintained through the years at Toyota dealerships from Maine, New York & Indiana. Regrettably, very few of the service records have been kept. I can tell you that all routine oil changes, filters etc have been done.

According to my review it has automatic locking center differential, and manually locking front and rear differentials.

You don't keep track of fuel economy with a Land Cruiser....you know better."

LOL, don't they all?

Listen to Kaderbak.

I think it's a fair place to start. There are a million variables though. No records despite claims of maintenance is not a plus. Lockers are a big plus. Otherwise it just seems like run of the mill 80 to me and not worth much more than $6,000.

We still don't know where it's located either, which is a pretty important piece of information.

Just my opinion.

So it would be reasonable to expect to find a clean '96 or so 80 around NC for 6-7k? I've just begun looking but haven't run across many later year models at that price level yet.

I would be suprised if you could pick it up for less than 8K. KBB private party value in "good" condition is $9535 and wholesale "trade-in" is $7295. Anything below wholesale on a 80 series with lockers is a great deal, especially if it's in good shape.

Yeah, I think the lockers ups the price by a grand or so. It is pretty low miles. I think it could be had around here for $7500 though. 80 series pricing has been spiraling for some time now.

I keep hearing that, but clean models are still going for over ten grand. I have a friend wanting to get a deal and have been looking, but all the Cruisers around here have a load of gold in the back.

Just take a good look underneath for surface rust...that'll make your life miserable if you plan to do any mods yourself. And if it is really nice in every other way and the rig you want you can use the rust factor to bargain the price down (every bolt you will turn will snap off and need to be tapped...not a REAL big deal...but definitely worth less). Mine came from Rochester NY and it was about 15% less than comperable West Coast vehicles at the time...and I found out why

I think it depends on how and where you're looking, also. eBay is way too public and way too easy and as a result, expensive. A good, local, person to person deal is what you're looking for, in my opinion. Buy from a Cruiser guy/gal.

I know it's not a Cruiser deal but here's an example of what I'm talking about. VW Golf TDIs are on fire on eBay. 50 mpg diesel cars selling for over $15,000. But after a long and patient wait and search, I bought a very well sorted out car from a TDIClub member for 2/3 of that. I had to pick up the phone. This was not a "behind my computer screen" deal. Literally person to person. I believe that is where the good Cruiser deals are also.

I think certain book values are skewed right now also. SUV values don't reflect $3.00/gallon gas prices (yet). Nor do TDI values, looking in the opposite direction. So I wouldn't rely so much on book values nor would I let a seller talk me into book values. They're just not current.

Good luck with it.
