I can't take the time to order and replace the valve at present. What is the downside to keep on motoring??

I thought it would just default to open. Mine had a 401 for some time before I was able to get to my VSV for EGR. It never went into "limp mode" and fuel mileage did not improve much after fixing the 401. The little bit of improvement I attest to cleaning the throttle body and intake really well.

It will NOT go limp mode, will NOT run open loop, will NOT be noticeable to the seat of the pants feel of driving, will NOT be fixed by replacing the EGR valve(It's almost never the valve itself) Do some searches, tons of info here.

Without the EGR working many small and cute furry little animals will die due to excess smog coming from your vehicle. Acid rain will pour from the skies and the end of the world will occur sooner than later.

As far as your 80 though, it'll just keep guzzling along as it always does, none the wiser.

SEARCH if you want to repair it by replacing the faulty component versus just throwing $$$ at is via the shotgun approach.

cheers,
george.

Every 80 owner will find out soon enough. EGR valves will eventually malfunction. Every last one of them.

If 80 owners are smart, they will buy 2 new EGR valves ASAP.

Emissions components are one of the first things Toyota discontinues as the 15 yr support period expires.

Just take a gander over to the 60 section.

Ultimate OEM 60 series parts still in stock

This is your future.... It's grim.

My truck has run about 6000 miles with the code. Avg 14-15 mpg split 50/50 highway and around town.

That 6k miles was with the valve stuck completely to the top of egr and no gasket between egr and manifold. Not a bad gasket....no gasket.

I appreciate the correction. Noted for future threads, thanks!

P0401 is for low flow. Meaning you are not dumping exhaust back into your combustion chamber. So no drivability will be noticed. If your valve were stuck open it would throw an excessive flow code p0402 I think. That would cause it to run like s*** or even die at idle or deceleration.

with a 402 code... EGR stuck open.. you have full time exhaust flow back in to the intake manifold, so the pipe running from the exhaust, through the EGR valve and in to the intake will be, and will stay way hot the entire time you are running, instead of just a few minutes during warmup. Sounds like a great way to shorten the life of the insulation on the wiring harness in that impossible to get to spot right behind the EGR. I would not wait fixing a 402 code.

Excessive egr flow means you are getting too much exhaust recirculated which will not burn. It may be a small amount but your truck would most defiantly benefit from fixing the excessive flow problem.

If the EGR were stuck open, the engine wouldn't idle. I have never seen a bad EGR valve on a 1FZ.

Could EGR be the cause of a rough idle without popping a code?

Here is mine that I pulled yesterday. Plunger stuck up.

Also I'd like to point out my truck had all the vacuum lines routed wrong, fully clogged egr modulator, and the egr valve stuck in that position with no gasket for roughly 6k miles.

During that time I had both codes thrown at one time or another and the truck has always run awesome.

Just as I thought: Press on regardless.......Thanks guys!
