Had noticed the last two days that my battery was losing charge, so decided to take it into the shop today. On my way in, panel lit up like a Christmas tree, nav screen started flashing, and 30 secs later truck shut down completely.

Had to get it towed. Could a dead alternator cause all this?

2nd pic is a sad sight...

Yes...

edit: -> should have been more explicit, was on my mo-bile dee-vice... Same thing happened to me last summer, fortunately, the dying part happened as I was coasting into my driveway. For several starts before that, there must've been insufficient voltage as my Kenwood HU would boot up with a loud "pop" and be slow to boot. Lights started dimming a few miles from home. I was lucky. There's a few alternator write-up's here. '06 is relatively new to see one fail. They aren't reported here on MUD with any great frequency. They do hang down low, and can get doused with mud/junk if you're burying the front end on a regular basis. I found it easiest to remove the lower radiator hose and push the fan shroud out of the way for removal/installation. Others seem to have been able to make it work without that, but really, draining the radiator is easy. There are two transmission cooler lines in the way of removal.

That's not a dead battery, that's for sure. When the engine is running, the Alternator should put out enough juice to sustain all electrical operations.

Yeah battery is a brand new group 31. I figured it was the alternator which is why I was headed to the shop. Just wasnt planning on the shutdown during a 10 min drive...

Just got the call. Def a blown alternator, $650.

On a whim I bought a bumper to bumper warranty extension at 60k miles for $1500. Not something I normally do, but glad I did. Since then NAV had failed ($3000), climate control fan has failed ($250), AHC accumulator has failed ($1200), and now alternator has failed ($650). By my math that's $5100 in repairs before 100k miles. Starting to wonder if I have a dud...

Katrina special :flipoff2: where was this truck raised? Wonder if it was flooded but never reported. That seems to be a lot of stuff failing in a short time. Glad you got that warranty

Oklahoma. Belonged to a drug rep, was a lease. I talked to the guy before purchase, just don't see how it could have been underwater. No gauge, lock, window issues, etc. Have had all the carpet and door trim off running wire, zero sign of water. No rust anywhere...none.

I dunno, you've got almost 100K miles, and none of those things are "unheard" of. Also, many will DIY the repair so the bills don't look as big. Alt can be done for 1/3 of the cost you're getting billed.

Once they take the alternator out, have it tested independent of the truck just to confirm it is in fact an alternator issue.
