One of my points for the gmrs radios is that there is no test for the license. Finding the time to take the test is too much for some of us.

If there is enough interest in the gmrs, I can try to out together a group buy of rugged radios.
 
Sounds like Ham is easier and cheaper to use
 
the reality is that while on the trail in a group using simplex, you are unlikely to have a problem without a license. yes, a license is required, but it seems like most users who start out unlicensed eventually do get one. for this reason, i also recommend HAM and most radios will also operate in the FRS, GMRS, MURS and on other frequencies.
 
I have a GMRS license and have "hacked" a couple of ham HTs to work on FRS, GMRS, and MURS. I like having comms options for those too lazy to get a ham license 😛. I have a CB in my vehicle but I don't bring the 1/4 wave whip antenna along very often. Just doesn't seem anyone, who speaks english, is on CB anymore. But it's there for a trip if needed. I also take a small HF ham radio along with me with a random wire antenna that covers all HF bands and takes up no space when packed. It's just another fall back for emergency comms. I also carry one of those SPOT messengers since our last Mojave Road trip....
