Seeking higher vistas
This was my family's summer road trip and camping adventure.
My friend loaned me his Adventure Trailer for the trip, since he and his better half have a very recent addition to the family. My buddy said "If I can't join you, then at least the trailer can!"
We left eastern Kansas on Saturday evening, and drove all night to arrive in Colorado and the heart of the Rocky Mountains.
We had breakfast in Empire, and then took to the trails in the vicinity. From one vantage point, a friendly 4x4 enthusiast pointed out all of the trails across the ridges and valleys depicted on our topo maps, and made a few recommendations for getting into some high mountain rainbows. (#1 son has been itching to learn fly-fishing). We spent two nights in the area, and loved every minute.
On Monday, we crossed the Berthoud Pass, and rolled into the Fraser Valley. We continued north for a while and took some light trails for general sight-seeing, fishing, and camping overnight.
Tuesday, we turned west and drove for Moab. We arrived in the late afternoon, and were happy to escape the heat by camping amongst the aspen trees at Warner Lake, off the La Salle Mountain Loop. We were joined by my wife's dad and step-mother (from Las Vegas), plus my wife's sister and her family (from SLC).
Wednesday and Thursday we made day trips from our "basecamp" into Moab. We visited Arches NP, did some touring and hiking, and did a river rafting trip, in addition to a few moderate trails each day.
Of course two and a half days were too short to see it all (it was my first visit to Moab in over 10 years!), but I guess that is all the more reason to go back again (and sooner!!!)
The last week of our two-week adventure was spent in St. George with the wife's family and our friends. Her step dad treated me to a trip to Kodiak Island, Alaska, where we loaded up on halibut and tall tales (unfortunately, the salmon were not active there during this time).
Time flies when you're having fun, and this adventure came too soon to a close. Work on Monday was a drag, as you can imagine!!
