Went to repaint my front bumper this weekend and was looking for the paint codes. Found the sticker on the DS door which said 1A5. I have a Desert Dune truck which is that light beige metallic color. The 1A5 I see at places like PaintScratch.com looks nothing like mine. The only search result I found for bumper paint codes was for a '99 100 series.

So I went to a paint shop and they too couldn't find any reference to the gray metallic color of the bumpers in their books. Even a body shop guy came out to look around my truck to see if they could spot something to tell what the color of the trim was...no luck.

Finally, I just grabbed the shops chip book and tried to compare the DuPont chips specified as Totota Land Cruiser bumper colors for '97 (of which to my surprise there were quite a few!) and came up with what was called Gray Metallic (surprise!) with a code of UCAA3.

Painted the bumper and side plastic wings, and it matched the original color very well; I am quite happy with the outcome. I was just wondering in retrospect if I just chose the right color, or if there is some other "official" color that I didn't get? Anyone else run into this?

Yo Tom:
did you do any special prep for the plastic extensions?
did the metal and plastic ends both come out OK and the same?

No special prep, other than a good/thorough sanding on all parts. I was looking for some sort of special primer, but didn't see any, though if it was black, I would not have noticed it. The wife has developed a fondness for the DS side of the garage, so I'll probably be doing this job several more times before the 80 calls it quits.

DuPont sells a special additive for the clearcoat that should be used on flexible parts, so I added this stuff in. One effect of this stuff is that it lengthens the drying time quite a bit! Can't remember the code number for it, but you only use a little bit. I think I now have a lifetime supply :D

The metal and plastic bits look identical; can't see any difference, even in full sunlight. I'm thinking of doing the back bumper too just becuase..., but since it's in perfect shape, can't get to enthused about it.
