Purchased this original New England truck this morning. A few boxes of parts were included. 1972 original engine, 3-spd on floor. New exhaust, clutch recently done. Only current issue is that it runs a little hot. We'll sort through a couple other minor issues, then enjoy it for now as a convertible. When Colin turns 10, plan is to tear it apart and refurbish it. And yes I know the turn signals are not correct and the bezel is upside down.

I guess the seats are original...I am not positive. I know the driver's side was raised an inch or two to accomodate a driver over 6' tall. Driver's seat has one nickel size hole.

Other issues. There is no headliner. No mirrors on either door. Rear heater is in one of the boxes. Missing overflow tank for radiator. All the electrics work fine. Most of the window and door rubber is ready for replacement. Passenger window wont crank down. Floor pans have already been replaced, but look good.

Some stuff included in the boxes are: bikini top, half soft top, original spare tire carrier, two blitz cans with holders, another gauge cluster, master cylinder and more. Anyone else notice the footman loops on the rear tub? Perhaps it had an original soft top at one time.

Sheri has been wanting a regular 40 for a while and I have rejected many (I cant weld or do body work) so patience finally rewarded us with a good truck and it was only 30 miles from the house.

solid and original, what a score
now comes the dilemma;modify or not
looks like colin is psyched, FG21?

GREAT SCORE and what a lucky 9 year old!!

I have a set of OEM mirror arms in good shape for that year if u want 'em.

Some of the early- mid seventies hardtops came with footman loops on the tub and barn doors.. as did my '74.. probably was never a factory soft top IMO.

My truck came with no radiator overflow tank.. if u have trouble finding the correct OEM one many people like myself have used an OEM overflow tank setup from and fj60 and all the parts are available new from Toyota.

I was curious what the half top that came with it is like?

When I saw this truck on CL, I was a little freaked out, because this is my image of the ultimate proportioned FJ-40. I have had this picture on my hard drive for many years for ....'if I ever get a 40'. So this is my goal for Colin's truck. Might include some of the standard modernizations. (3FE, disk brakes, 5spd etc.) The one below looks like OME with 32x11.50s, but that's a guess.

I think the mirrors are in one of the boxes. We have to check condition and let you know.

Good to know, thanks Mark.

Found out the engine running hot issue was low coolant due to....no overflow tank. So temps are now fine, but have to get this resolved first. Thanks for the tip. Kina should also have something that will work.

I will be taking off the hard top after Kinas weekend, so I will post a pic, but I think its pretty basic. Just goes from windshield over the roll bar and straight down to the floor. Has a window for rear view, but doesn't seal around the doors or anything.

Colin is areal lucky kid. An FJ40 for a kindergarten grad gift!!!!

Previous Owner

I was digging in the boxes of stuff that came with the truck. I found two issues of Toyota Trails from 1994 and both of them had articles on the Catamount Cruiser Challenge held in MA. Anybody know Thomas Kugel of Somerville, MA? He is most likely a previous owner of this '72 FJ-40. TLCA member 1462

BTW...interesting reading the old Trails mag.

Did some cleaning up this weekend. Almost ready for inspection and registration.

Removed rust and spray painted wheels.
Removed hard top
Polish and wax
Put on some mirrors, bikini top.

Well, through some Yankee Toy networking, I have been able to secure some parts for this truck. Rufus the Dufus has provided 5 split rims, which will be blasted and painted, mounted with 235/85/16s. 82Cruiser connected us with a black paki-soft top. Tedd at Cruiser Solutions had OEM bows, to be painted Freeborn Red. Landtank is giving up his dual fuel propane conversion from his Aussie 40. Still collecting this stuff, but that is the vision. Truck has been running great. I drive it to work once a week (50 miles round trip) and use it for local errands. The only issue the truck has is brakes. The reservoir for the rear leaks and I havent jumped into it yet.

Does Colin cut you a good deal for use of his vehicle for commuting like that?!?
