Cold weather issues with my 80. (1 Viewer)

I have a 3 car garage, but I can only park one car inside (Don't ask me why).
Anyway my wife gets to park her minivan in the garage and I park my LC outside, as you know it can get pretty cold here in Idaho and this winter it has been at least in the 30's every morning, sometimes in the 20's.
Here are some of the issues that I have noticed every morning when I drive the LC.

1. As I start the truck it makes a whinning sound just as the engine starts. Wife's minivan used to do this and it turned out to be the power steering reservoir. Could it be the same?

2. The steering wheel has a dragging sound like something is caught up in the colunm, again once it is warm sound goes away. My 60 had a similar sound, but it turn out to be the mechanical speedometer cable that did not like cold weather.

3. Windshield used to have a minor 6 inch crack that grew into a 20 inch crack right along the heater windshield defroster becasue of the cold.

Has any of you noticed similar symptoms?

As a Canuck , I experience all these things . I've even been sitting in my 80 idling as the small crack across the windshield suddenly grew 400% !!


All normal in the cold climes .

I used to hear #1 on my 84 mini in temps in the teens or colder. I reckoned it was one of the belts slipping on the pulley. The steering wheel would squeak when it got down to 6F or colder. In fact, the steering wheel squeak has also occured w/ every car I've driving in near 0F conditions.

Pretty normal in the cold. However, 1) make sure the PS fluid is at the corect level. 2)??. 3) Almost any crack will grow in cold weather.

The whining sound could be a lot of things, but that it goes away (you never said how long, etc) is a good sign. Likely the cold belts (good shape, factory belts?) trying to spin the fan until the viscous coupling warms a bit (the fan is at 100% on cold startup).

The steering wheel sound is a well known one. It's the horn contact on the horn ring. Take a flashlight when it's dark and look between the back of the steering wheel and the steering column from about the driver's A pillar handle angle and you'll see the brass ring and contact. Fire a bit of light lube in there sparingly, using the little red plastic tube most aerosols come with.

The windshield is typical behavior for cracks in cold weather.

You’re lucky it only gets to the 20's! Early in Jan. we were experiencing -20 F.

The consensus on the board is that the whining noise is the power steering pump as it starts with gel fluid. It was determined to by just a nuisance noise.

My cruisers did the same thing due to cold weather. I parked all my cruisers outside during the winter months up in Truckee, or Lake Tahoe. It gets damn cold there, esp Truckee! The sound went away as soon as it warmed up bit and the steering wheel sound was a given. Oh lets not forget the cracking of the windshield either, that is always a trip to be sitting in your beast while its warming up and then watch your windshield crack from side to side, all the way across. Makes a cool sound as well! Anyway, I think your exp the normal issues due to cold weather and how it affects your beast!
